Alright, first of all, this game has a 5-10 hour learning curve. It's got ASCII (read: shit) graphics and a mind numbing user interface.

But the gameplay.

Oh lord, the gameplay is so marvelous. You control a fortress full of Dwarves in a fractally generated world. It's got realistic fluid systems (blood, magma, water), an economy, and lizardmen. I can't even begin to describe it.

Here is a link: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

And here is the wiki guide you M U S T use if you even want to begin to understand the game: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index. ... t_fortress

Have fun.

I tried this but on my old monitor it didn't fit width wise XD

Also my major dislike for ASCII games is not the graphics but the controls, they're always so damn complicated (read too lazy to work them out).

As good as the gameplay is, the ASCII overwhelms my eyes.
I just can't play those type of games, although this one was tempting to actually progress in it, but ack! the ASCII, just the damn ASCII.

I tried it once, but I couldn't really be bothered wading through the poor interface and the constant need to look things up. The gameplay sounds like it should be good, but when it takes hours to work out the very basics of what you're doing? That's kind of off-putting. I might try again if I get sufficiently bored.

Well, my fortress narrowly escaped flooding after a winter mining session into the frozen lake.

I recently started playing this (about a week ago), and even though I haven't done much yet, I find that the ASCII graphics really aren't especially bad. It's just the learning curve that annoys me, especially since I never spend a long time on it. I'm still learning the basics, but I love the detail and thought that was put into every part of the game except the interface and graphics.

Edit: I find that it's best to learn how to play by playing it in short intervals, maybe 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Also, my first fortress is a mess, but oh well.

I'm proud of this fort, she has 103 dwarves, a queen, no baron yet (thank god), and tons of copper
