I found it very stupid and annoying to read posts that based their positions on their current life statuses—at a time when your life is "not worth living?" How important can such a cause be, then? How important is ANY cause to die for if you'd only die for it at a time when you feel your own personal loss is minimized? That is pathetic and severely weakens if not fully nullifies in itself the value of your sacrifice.
Tsukatu wrote:Only if you're convinced that you can accomplish more with your sacrifice than you could if you continued to live out your life.
That's pretty much the gist of it, for anyone—but I think the threadstarter's asking what that "accomplishment" would be to you, and how it differs from person to person.

This is an issue that I've been having trouble with for some time now, since I rank the saving of souls as top priority—the problem with this is that it's really difficult to foresee cause & effect. I ask myself: if I die now, what about all the people in the future who I could have brought to God? But then that can be countered by the fact that I'm not the only one at work, so if I were to die in the act of saving one or a few people, whether friends or strangers, they could be moved as to accept Him and further my cause themselves, perhaps even more effectively.

By the end of it all, I abide by Christ's simple, easy-to-understand gesture, John 15:13 - "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." I think I may die for anyone (whether I know him/her or not) who is in my vicinity and is about to be killed, whose death I know I can clearly substitute with my own, and who I can give blessing to before I pass on. In any case, causes worth living for should be no different than causes worth dying for, or it's a waste of life and time.

Heh. I just solved my own spiritual dilemma. Thanks for this.

I'd sacrifice my life for alot of things-
If it wasnt worth living anymore
To save someone/something important to me
To save someone/something important to the rest of the world
And lots of things too.

No, i wouldnt sacrifice myself to see if there was any sort of afterlife.

Orange- N cannot be spoken, or even thought about in my household. If my parents ever found out that I have played N since the cleansing, my life would be ruined. I keep the game in a multi-passworded .rar on a USB flash drive inside a locked boron alloy container that requires two keys to open (I keep one under the 64th hammer in my piano, and the other one in a small section of removable ceiling in the corner of the attic) hidden in a wall compartment lined with aluminium foil to prevent sonar detection behind my 375 kg cupboard, which is bolted to the floor - the only way to reach it is to abseil outside the fourth floor window and use a screwdriver to unfasten the screws holding the secret brick in place on the opposite side of the wall, but the screwdriver must be a specific type like the one I own, since if any other screwdriver comes into contact with the screws, the entire building will explode, as will a seperate charge placed inside the boron alloy container, rendering the USB useless. Even once the container is retrieved, attemping to open it without the arming pin in place (which is kept inside the battery compartment of my Maglite) will cause the water reservoirs lining the container to burst and react with the caesium lining, causing the container to burst into flames - the only way to prevent this is to use the arming pins to shut off the reservoirs with a sliding steel door. The USB itself contains an accelerometer linked to an explosive charge, meaning that if the USB detects its own movement speed as being greater than 5 cm/s, it will explode - any person attempting to steal it would have to move at a uselessly slow speed. Once plugged into a computer, the USB will upload a ghost virus onto it, leaving no traces. Only the right password can deactivate this virus, and if it is left on the computer for more than six hours, it will format all drives.

As you can see, I take my N playing very seriously.

Guiseppi- I'd much rather watch animals get boned in the ass.

Yanni- If it's glad, it's not rape.

Tsukatu- I refuse to use throw-away bags for such a frequent purpose as buying groceries. Instead, I've collected the hair of my two pet dogs and have woven them together into an all-natural, 100% environmentally friendly bag that I bring with me everywhere. And when I buy products that come in glass and plastic containers, I track down the company that packages them and ship back their containers so that they don't take up space in landfills.

Yeah, I use plastic.

Tsukatu- I hear Ebony Online is great, too. Cum save your princess, my lord!

Ska- UR MUM LIKE IS SPICY

Ska- why d i get the feeling what i typed will end up in the quote depository; or worse: someone's sig.

KinGAleX- I did it on the couch a little while ago.

Zeph- I got too pissed at the knife in the end so I just broke the wood on my knee

If there was a chance of both me and the person who I was saving surviving, I'd probably go for it. But not if it was a horrible person. The kind who'd not realise that I'd saved their life and call me a 'daft bugger' or something as I lay fatally wounded.

If it was certain that I was going to die, I'd probably sacrifice myself for my friends/ or some worthy cause. I'm not the kind of person who ponders whether himself or the person to be saved will contribute more to the world. I just really like the idea of people being utterly selfless.

I've almost died twice, and I have to say it doesn't scare me at all. Once I almost drowned 'cos I went down a water slide without realising that it lead into the diving pool. I just stood at the bottom for a while (I've no idea how long it was, but I guess it was about 100 seconds, cos I was holding my breath to the extreme. And then some lifeguard rescued me. It kind of inspired me for a while, I learned to swim and I'm better than all my friends now :D So I guess it would complete the cycle if I saved someone. Like paying off a debt at long last.

The second time was almost suicide. But it didn't feel like it. I was on a ferry, and I had a really strong inclination to jump off the edge. It was weird because I didn't feel down at all at the time. In retrospect though, I was the most depressed I've ever been. But then I realised just how selfish it would be to die needlessly. All the time and efffort people put into me and the people who'd miss me... Ultimately, thinking how I'd feel if someone else did that made me dismiss the idea.

So there a chunk of my life story for you :D In summary, I'm not scared of dying for someone, because I feel that I shouldn't be alive right now if someone hadn't helped me.

I've already felt like that, but the reason I didn't commit suicide was that... "Let's hope tomorrow will be a better day". It was (well, not really the next day, but when the vacations ended a year ago).

It wasn't my selfishness that made me not commit suicide. It was my fear of dying, that at the time was struggling to be higher than all the sadness.

And like I said before, I don't think I could really die for someone.

It's funny how much more value people tend to put on life when you ask what they would give it up for, as opposed to why they should keep theirs. Some would die for nothing even while they wouldn't die for anything.

i think its stupid to give your life for a religion, but maybe thats because im not very religious beyond believing in god.

multiple reasons:
My girl (if i had one)
Humanity
Anyone in my immediate family
Some people in my not-so-immediate family
my best friend and ONLY my best friend. other friends dont count.
If i was really old and about to die anyway and dying might benefit someone else

If my life was going nowhere and there was no clear way out

and so it goes, and so it goes, and so will you soon i suppose.

Well, you mentally box it in by calling it just another "religion." For the true believer, it should be all-consuming, affecting every aspect of one's life.

Amen. To use the lexicon of a popular musical genre, it appears to me that most who would call themselves religious is just fake-ass gangstas.

The only thing to die for is an idea. A person can be stabbed or shot, a place can be burnt or bombed, but an idea; an idea is invincible. An idea cannot die, as long as there are people that hold it true and valuable. Ideas are eternal.

To know what is really worth dieing for, watch (or read the old comic of, but most likely watch) V for Vendeta.
Now back from life.

I think people die for causes because they believe, on some subconscious level, that they'll get to experience whatever their death acheived. Consciously, yes, they understand that it's all over for them. But beneath that, I think their mind creates expectations of a future that they'll enjoy personally.

stopping the deaths of more people (if my action saves more people than my inaction, I'd do it)
quotes of the old forum

Blue_Tetris: Wait, wait wait. Does this mean I can break the rules to provoke a reaction and not get banned?
...awesome! The next few days are gonna be some fun.

Someguy: Eagles may soar in the sky, but weasels never get sucked right into a jet engine

Steven Colbert: I see patterns where they don't where they don't exist!!!

Mosh: Fishing for fish only works if the fish are hungry. Don't ask the fish why they don't bite. Rather, consider why they aren't biting.
Or simply chuck a grenade in the lake, pick up the dead fish, and call it a day.

capt_weasle: Mare is actually reagan who is really Tsukatu, who is actually just God. And you can't say he isn't because that would mean he doesnt believe in himself. He just has a low self esteem. Poor guy.

Palemoon:thanks, maestro. Now i can stop smearing paste on my face with a broom

Animator:Eat those poor gingerbread men? For shame. Do you know how many widows are in a gingerbread family? Millions. They have been fighting a war with humanity ever since they were made just to survive and live, with no luck! Think of the children, man! Those poor gingerbread children who are orpahns now, because their moms and dads were eaten, AND THEY WILL SHARE THE SAME FATE TOO! It's saddening. Please, go out there and raise money to save this ever-endangered reality of sugar and bread. Please, for the sake of this kind... think of the oven.

Player 1:You may very well be the first person on the planet to have his faced caved in by a fistful of turkey. Congratulations.

EDWARD: "Hello, Bella. I am very awkward, and I am a vampire."

BELLA: "I am infatuated with you." (she turns to the camera) "I am unaware that Edward is a vampire."
EDWARD: "I am infatuated with you, too, and I am a vampire."
BELLA: "Let's be awkward together." (she turns to the camera) "I am still unaware that Edward is a vampire."
EDWARD: "I completely agree, and I am very clearly a vampire."
(EDWARD does vampirey things.)
BELLA: "Thank you for saving my life."
EDWARD: "No problem, and I am a vampire."
BELLA: (to the camera) "I am beginning to suspect that Edward is not human."
EDWARD: "I am a vampire."

EDWARD: "No, I am a vampire."
BELLA: "What are you then?"
EDWARD: "I am not the good guy; I am the bad guy." (he turns to the camera) "That was a lie. I am very much the good guy." (he turns back to Bella) "Specifically, I am a vampire."
BELLA: (to the camera) "I am beginning to suspect that Edward is a vampire."

JACOB: "Hello, Bella, and I am very clearly a werewolf. Look at my wacky canines."
BELLA: "What do you have against Edward, anyway?"
JACOB: "I am a werewolf."
BELLA: "I am convinced that you are a normal human being."
JACOB: "Everyone in my tribe is a werewolf. I am in my tribe; I am also a werewolf. We are all werewolves."
BELLA: "I have no reason to believe that you are more than human."

And what exactly is Bella's problem? Why does she fall head-over-heels with an anti-social, almost preternaturally awkward, whiny, mascara-wearing emo cunt?

I guess the guy who wrote XKCD was right. You can't be too stupid for youtube.

When i say 'Abortion is murder' i mean just that; it is the taking of life - in that, from conception, a fetus is as definably life as is a bacteria, a puppy, or Stephen Hawking. This is how i think it differs from contraception, masturbation, and not screwing Dave.

Blue_Tetris quotes (all taken from a topic on abortion)

Eating vegetables instead of meat lowers your sperm count, clearly killing potential children. Vegetarians are murderers.

If a chair comes into my house and I don't want it there, I do everything in my power to remove it. What makes you think you have more rights than a chair when you go into someone else's home unannounced?

If I'm sleeping around without a condom, I'm likely to have a child too. When I wear a condom, I prevent the likely child I would have. Condoms are for murderers. I'm good at picking up dates and getting them into the sack, so if I restrain myself from going clubbing then I am prventing a potential child. Non-socialites are murderers.

What ever happened to the purpose of Christmas anyway, I thought it was about elves smacking each other over the head with a shovel whilst Santa drank whisky and egged them on.

I give you a laser printer and set it to stun

there are about 20 individuals that i wouldnt even hesitate to die for, and i know that there are many many others that i would probably sacrifice my life for as well, but im not strong enough in my backing to fully say yes.
i'd also say that id sacrifice myself for love, but then again im a hopeless romantic.
I feel the top of the roof come off, kill everybody there as I'm watching all the stars burn out, trying to pretend that I care.

But I didn't, no-one ever does, and I would, no-one ever will

Can't you see it's all flown out of my hands and our clothes are all too often ripped and our teeth are all too often gnashed and it lasts as long as it possibly can but I just don't accept this.

I just don't accept this at all.

Faces sweaty, arms and legs, what a glorious set of stairs we make.

We kill everyone with arrowheads, arrowheads, arrowheads. Thank god that's over.

FOR THE HORDE

It's really hard to answer something like this unless there is an actual danger of this happening. Ideally, I would like to say that I would sacrifice my life defending my religion, but it's much easier to talk the talk than walk the walk, and unfortunately, a very very large percentage of both theists and atheist either don't know what they believe in, or they're faking it, or they believe but stop there. (and an even smaller number would die for what they believe.)
ExüberNewsFeed: Exuberance is mostly <AFF> (Away From Forums) for a while, though I may still participate in epic contests/threads. When I return, I shall bring several comic updates (enough to finish season 1) and hopefully 1 or 2 games- at least one of which is N-related
Comic Activity-O-Meter: (how often I'm updating my comic)
(Click here to see what each level and half-level means in terms of updates per time period)

NOTE: If I just add a bunch of comics in one day, but plan on going back to normal after that, I probably won't update the status.
+ Dead: Canceled. Done. Maybe you'll get a random comic like once a year, but it's pretty much done.
- Zombie (Dead/Comatose): The comic is probably done regular updates forever, but I'll probably still add something once in a blue moon. It's still POSSIBLE, that I'll raise the status up, but not very likely. Maybe I'll have a comicplosion for like a week, then go back to being dead
+ Comatose: Complete stand-by. No (or very few) updates for some amount of time, but the comic's far from being over
- <AFK> (Comatose/Loitering): Stand-by, but you might possibly count on a few updates once and a while. Again, this is temporary
+ Loitering: Like comatose, but for short amount of times.
- Turtling (Loitering/Semi-Active): Really slooooww updates
+ Semi-Active: One every 2 weeks...ish?
- Quasi-Active (Semi-Active/Active): Averaging about 2 comics every 3 weeks
+ Active: Loosely defined status, but about a weekly update
- Over-Active (Active/Power-leveling): About 2 comics a week
+ Power-leveling: About 3 comics a week. Possible a schedule, possibly not
- Über-Epic (Power-leveling/COMICPLOSION!!): In some cases, this may actually be mean updates more frequently than COMICPLOSION!!, but I'm defining this level as a non-organized comic rush, kind of like a few days after my comic started
+ COMICPLOSION!!: Daily updates for a minimum of 5 days (since the daily updates started. It remains at this status until the 5, 7, whatever days are done)

To paraphrase Bertrand Russell, I wouldn't die for something I believe in. I might be wrong.

so to clarify, demonz, you wouldn't die for anything?

Like I said on page one, I'd die for someone I value more than myself. I wouldn't die for the sake of an idea that I hold. I acknowledge the possibility that my beliefs could be incorrect and so to die for them would be a waste of life, which is something I can't stand for. (But I might be wrong about this belief!)
