1) Being able to crit enemy spies nearly at will is not 'eh'
2) It is another way to use your sentry that lets me blow up incoming spies
3) The update goes live Thursday, we only have 2 more days of updates

1) Granted.
2) Uh, while using the Wrangler, you won't be able to control the engy. Spy can just the cloak all the way behind you. Switching back to engy cause 3 seconds of downtime on the engy, so the spy can engage in a quick revolver battle with you and avoid the sentry. The extra defense is nice and all, but I don't see how my aim is going to be superior to the computer's.

1) You are assuming I build my stuff where there is a 'behind me' to cloak to, generally there are 2 intersecting walls that people generally refer to as 'corners'
2) I plan on using this from atop my sentry, in a corner
3) My aim is better then the computers because I will blow up disguised spies (and harmlessly shoot dozens of actual teammates)

Ideally, you could use the wrangler like this:

Step 1: Build a sentry with a dispenser near by. Upgrade them both.
Step 2: Find a friendly engie willing to babysit your sentry (constantly repairing and reloading it).
Step 3: Run back to the safety of your spawn, and activate the wrangler.

It should work as long as you can use the wrangler from anywhere within the map, and as long as your friendly engie keeps an eye on your sentry.

Oh yeah, so the Wrangler's shield negates 66% of all incoming damage, right? Does that include damage from a Spy's sapper?

Exactly. You'll be able to spy check with the sentry now.

So it's the engineer's job to spy-check now? All this wrangler did was make the Engineer a part-stationary soldier.

If you aren't spy checking as engi already, you are a bad engi. I give a shotgun blast or two to every player who gets anywhere near me.

The Wrangler, I would presume, will now let you shoot outside of the normal targeting range. This will make defense on the 2nd point of the 1st part of Dustbowl more fun >:D

There's a link to this on the update page. I wonder what it's all about.

Community weapon made by him.

Mmkay, so in Day 3, we got movable level 2 sentries, a new PLR map, and a community weapon (the Beat All, by Watchmaker) and Valve says theres another melee weapon.

All the wrenches are gone and the update page has been updated once again. I'm kinda confused, seeing as I can't find evidence of moving sentries anymore, but there's an achievement for it. The guitar achievement leads me to believe that the frontier justice has a taunt kill.

Update notes state that you can move sentries now. You'll go at half the heavy's speed to not make it OP.

Also, gunslinger is a rip-off from Ratchet and Clank, but that just means I love it so much more.

Managed to somehow get all 3 new engi weapons in half an hour of playing, also crafted my first hat 2 days ago, it was a crappy batters helmet but then I crafted it with my camera beard to get ZE GOGGLES

Orange- N cannot be spoken, or even thought about in my household. If my parents ever found out that I have played N since the cleansing, my life would be ruined. I keep the game in a multi-passworded .rar on a USB flash drive inside a locked boron alloy container that requires two keys to open (I keep one under the 64th hammer in my piano, and the other one in a small section of removable ceiling in the corner of the attic) hidden in a wall compartment lined with aluminium foil to prevent sonar detection behind my 375 kg cupboard, which is bolted to the floor - the only way to reach it is to abseil outside the fourth floor window and use a screwdriver to unfasten the screws holding the secret brick in place on the opposite side of the wall, but the screwdriver must be a specific type like the one I own, since if any other screwdriver comes into contact with the screws, the entire building will explode, as will a seperate charge placed inside the boron alloy container, rendering the USB useless. Even once the container is retrieved, attemping to open it without the arming pin in place (which is kept inside the battery compartment of my Maglite) will cause the water reservoirs lining the container to burst and react with the caesium lining, causing the container to burst into flames - the only way to prevent this is to use the arming pins to shut off the reservoirs with a sliding steel door. The USB itself contains an accelerometer linked to an explosive charge, meaning that if the USB detects its own movement speed as being greater than 5 cm/s, it will explode - any person attempting to steal it would have to move at a uselessly slow speed. Once plugged into a computer, the USB will upload a ghost virus onto it, leaving no traces. Only the right password can deactivate this virus, and if it is left on the computer for more than six hours, it will format all drives.

As you can see, I take my N playing very seriously.

Guiseppi- I'd much rather watch animals get boned in the ass.

Tsukatu- I refuse to use throw-away bags for such a frequent purpose as buying groceries. Instead, I've collected the hair of my two pet dogs and have woven them together into an all-natural, 100% environmentally friendly bag that I bring with me everywhere. And when I buy products that come in glass and plastic containers, I track down the company that packages them and ship back their containers so that they don't take up space in landfills.

Nice!

I also managed to craft a Killer's Kabuto. Not a huge fan, but it's cool.

As for the weapons -
Frontier Justice - got it, but didn't use it much. Looks really cool though.
Gunslinger - I was hoping for this to be the greatest thing in this update. I thought you would be able to deploy /multiple/ mini-sentries. No. Only one. Even for battle engy I'd prefer the regular wrench. However, it looks totally awesome. (the claw, not the sentry)
Wrangler - Haven't gotten it yet.

So far, just lil' disappointed. Haven't tried the maps, but they look somewhat neat. Mostly Highrise.

EDIT: Two redeeming qualities about update: Both of the engineer's taunt kills. Mostly the Frontier's.

EDITEDIT: Frontier Justic + Gonslinger combo = revenge n' crit heaven.

Just give this one some time. :D

Except you could deploy several of those turrets, some of them shot lasers, and they were actually /useful/ even by themselves.

I played for 2 hours and got jack in the way of new unlocks :(

This has made playing spy incredibly easy though.
1) Disguise as Engi
2) Sap everything
3) Keep sapping everything (they don't know which engi it is yet)
4) See line 3
5) Die after getting 8 sapper destructions
6) Return to 1

I have played Spy a total of 90 minutes in the past two years, I suck at it. I still sapped 18 buildings (that blew up, I think I literally planted sappers on 50) in 60 seconds over 3 lives.

Just to add on to what I previously said, this update is fantastic. I even like the Gunslinger, which I can't see as very effective in any situation (you should obviously be able to diploy more than one mini-sentry; I can see this being buffed and the Wrangler nerfed), but those mini-sentries are so damn cute. I think moving gear should've been an option all this time, also, so I really dig that, too.

Also, for those who don't know yet, if you want to craft the Southern Hospitality, it takes one scrap metal and an Ambassador. It's pretty neat to have for those who don't use the Gunslinger and want to switch up with the normal wrench.

I have to agree now. After playing with the weapons now and spending some time on the four new maps, this has to be one of my all-time favorite two updates (other one being sniper/spy).

I still think the gunslinger should get one more turret, but it's an incredibly effective ninjaneering weapon. It lets the engineer go to the frontlines, and coupled with the revenge crits, it can be a deadly combo with the new shotgun. This is one of the few updates that adds a complete new playing style to the engineer, but not taking anythign else out of the game.

Oh, and the level 3 mini-sentry glitch is still there. It's so cuuuuuuuuteeee.

I love this update. Once I unlocked all the weapons I immediately went demoman/spy and dominated every engineer. It was bliss. Also, smartalco's tactic works wonders, at least for the next week. I think I had 40-ish destructions in a single life.

Really? It destroys my sentry every time I equip the gunslinger.

^If I remember right, you need to do the following sequence

Build normal level 3 sentry (wrench equipped)
Pick it up
Switch loadout to Gunslinger
(Possibly, but I think this step is wrong: switch loadout back to wrench)
Place sentry
Giggle at how cute your little death machine is

note: it still does normal mini-sentry damage, it just looks cool

They fixed it a day after the update came out, at least they said they did but I've heard there are other ways from people.

Yanni- If it's glad, it's not rape.

Yeah, I use plastic.

Tsukatu- I hear Ebony Online is great, too. Cum save your princess, my lord!

Ska- UR MUM LIKE IS SPICY

Ska- why d i get the feeling what i typed will end up in the quote depository; or worse: someone's sig.

KinGAleX- I did it on the couch a little while ago.

Zeph- I got too pissed at the knife in the end so I just broke the wood on my knee

Alright, I have deemed the mini-sentries just plain annoying. Unless you run in to 2 of them at once, you can take one out as any class, you can take 2 out as the higher HP classes. And any engi that uses them as defense is just stupid (there are a lot of them), if your sentry isn't going to move in quite awhile, build a level 3 and let it actually kill people.

So the only use I've found for them is to have like 3 offensive engi's popping them out everywhere (which having that many engies on offense normally doesn't work out well), or in weird corners as a sneak attack.

The most effective offensive engineering I've seen is the obvious one: build a level 3 sentry and move it to the front lines.
I have yet to see an equivalently effective use of mini-sentries.

Admittedly, I haven't played for very long since the engineer update was released (although I got 7 achievements in, like, fifteen minutes, almost all of them inadvertently), but this has so far become my main playing style:
Assuming the teams are evenly balanced, work throughout the round to build and maintain a forward base.
  • Before the round begins, build a L3 teleporter entrance and a L3 dispenser. Build the dispenser first so it has plenty of time to build up its store of metal.
  • When the round starts, do your best to weasel past the front line, find a good spot for a forward base (which is not necessarily a common advancement point, as the enemy will probably spot it before it's up and running), and drop a teleporter exit.
  • Kill yourself immediately, as the enemy will be suspicious if they see you moving to the front line from their side.
  • As you'll probably spawn before the teleporter exit is up, pick up your dispenser and wait on top of your entrance for the teleporter exit to finish building itself.
  • As soon as you teleport, plop the dispenser down and build a L3 sentry immediately. All the while, your teammates will be drawn to the teleporter like moths to a flame, so you'll have plenty of company.
The end product, when done right, is a spontaneous, fully developed base out of fucking nowhere.
The days of camping in fear beside your L1 sentry and desperately waiting for the single box of metal to respawn are over. Now is a new era of offensive engineering.
