And any engi that uses them as defense is just stupid (there are a lot of them), if your sentry isn't going to move in quite awhile, build a level 3 and let it actually kill people.
So the only use I've found for them is to have like 3 offensive engi's popping them out everywhere (which having that many engies on offense normally doesn't work out well), or in weird corners as a sneak attack.
The most effective offensive engineering I've seen is the obvious one: build a level 3 sentry and move it to the front lines.
I have yet to see an equivalently effective use of mini-sentries.
Admittedly, I haven't played for very long since the engineer update was released (although I got 7 achievements in, like, fifteen minutes, almost all of them inadvertently), but this has so far become my main playing style:
Assuming the teams are evenly balanced, work throughout the round to build and maintain a forward base.
- Before the round begins, build a L3 teleporter entrance and a L3 dispenser. Build the dispenser first so it has plenty of time to build up its store of metal.
- When the round starts, do your best to weasel past the front line, find a good spot for a forward base (which is not necessarily a common advancement point, as the enemy will probably spot it before it's up and running), and drop a teleporter exit.
- Kill yourself immediately, as the enemy will be suspicious if they see you moving to the front line from their side.
- As you'll probably spawn before the teleporter exit is up, pick up your dispenser and wait on top of your entrance for the teleporter exit to finish building itself.
- As soon as you teleport, plop the dispenser down and build a L3 sentry immediately. All the while, your teammates will be drawn to the teleporter like moths to a flame, so you'll have plenty of company.
The end product, when done right, is a spontaneous, fully developed base out of fucking nowhere.
The days of camping in fear beside your L1 sentry and desperately waiting for the single box of metal to respawn are over. Now is a new era of offensive engineering.
