I'm thinking about getting a handheld soon, and I was just wondering what you guys thought. Do you like the DS or the PSP? For me I'm only really interested in the games, so I was leaning towards the DS. The new Pokémon game sounds great, and I'd also like to get Phantom Hourglass and the new Super Mario Bros. I don't know too much about PSP titles, although I know it has a Final Fantasy Tactics remake which sounds cool, other than that I don't know of anything else I'd like to get. If you know of any good RPGs on either system, I'd be interested in those as well. So yeah, post the system of your choice and some of your favorite games.

Only DS lite, that said that's the only model you should even consider. And yeah I have both, PSP has plenty of awesome games but no shovelware like the DS has but this also means you don't get the sheer amount of hidden gems (You throw enough games at a platform there's going to be good ones some where). Either way unless you want a sheer mass of JRPGs or you just want monster hunter get a DS.Pheidippides wrote:It also doubles as a back-lit GBA. ;)Techno wrote:Nintendo DS all the way.

I know that's not the point you're trying to make but there is no good games for PSP lately, I mean, yeah, there were some pretty awesome games for PSP (I'm sure I played ninety percent of them) and it's a shame that this handheld console is not that awesome at the moment as it used to be. imo.Luminaflare wrote:PSP has plenty of awesome games

Yeah, I know there are good games that are released for PSP once in a while but PSP's gold ages are over, you know what I mean.

Final Fantasy: Crisis Core was enough of a reason for me to get a PSP. God of War and Monster Hunter were excellent affirmations that I chose correctly. fl0w and Crush were also outstanding.
Then again, I'm the sort of person who counts the mention of bullshit like "Pokemon HeartGold" as a massive reason against buying a DS.
If you want endless numbers of bright, super, happy, bouncy, candy games with cartoon characters, go for the DS. If you prefer games that take themselves much more seriously, go with the PSP.

Hm, Tsukatu has the most legitimate point, there are exceptions to the rule but that describes it in a nut shell. That said you should get a DS just for infinite space :P

Aww, but everyone loves Pokémon! How can you not like constantly handing the arses of little pixellated children back to them on a plate for 100+ hours?!Suki wrote:Then again, I'm the sort of person who counts the mention of bullshit like "Pokemon HeartGold" as a massive reason against buying a DS.

16:21 <~Tsukatu> College: Yeah, Pokemon! Awesome!
16:21 < fireburnsfree> lol
16:21 < Techno> xD

16:21 < Vyacheslav> Ahahahaha!
16:21 < Vyacheslav> So true.
16:21 <~Tsukatu> Yeah, um, just wanted to comment that it's actually bullshit...
16:22 <~Tsukatu> Just bee-tee-dubs.
16:22 < spoon> I >:/
16:22 < Vyacheslav> My friend is obsessed with Pokemon,
16:22 < spoon> Suki bullshit. >:/ \:<
16:22 < Vyacheslav> He's also a freshman in college, yet he can recite the entire pokedex in order... when he's drunk.
16:22 < Vyacheslav> He's got a pokemon walker.
16:22 <~Tsukatu> I haven't played Pokemon since middle school, and I have never run into anyone in my 4 years across multiple universities who would accept Pokemon as, like, anything but childish nonsense.
16:24 <~Tsukatu> Hold on a sec, Vyach: I'm not saying that "no one in college ever talks about Pokemon". I'm saying "no one who is anyone (in college) ever talks about Pokemon".
16:25 < Vyacheslav> Tsukatu, everyone loves my friend.
16:25 < Vyacheslav> Seriously.
16:25 < Vyacheslav> He's the heart and soul of the 4 classes I have with him.
16:25 < TS> Tsukatu, am I allowed to talk about Pokemon if I'm making an xkcd reference?
16:25 < Donfuy> What, is there a rule against Pokémon?
16:28 <~Tsukatu> TS: Yeah, XKCD is big in college.
16:28 < TS> That's good then.
16:28 <~Tsukatu> 16:25:10 < Vyacheslav> Tsukatu, everyone loves my friend.
16:28 <~Tsukatu> I... don't believe you.
16:29 <~Tsukatu> In my experience, there's a "kind" of person who is both in college and talks about Pokemon ethusiastically...
16:29 <~Tsukatu> And that's not a kind of person who's ever social where it actually counts.
16:29 < Vyacheslav> Tsukatu, he has a ton of friends.
16:29 <~Tsukatu> I'm sure your friend has plenty of other people in his... category... who are all happy to have their depressing little Pokemon wankfests.
16:30 < Vyacheslav> No, not really.
16:30 < Vyacheslav> He drew a Jynx in class today.
16:30 < Donfuy> Pokemon wangfests o_O
16:31 <%incluye> that's the first thing I see when I get back?
16:31 < Vyacheslav> Aren't you one lucky bastard.
16:31 < Donfuy> Hey blame Suki.
16:32 <~Tsukatu> It's just... you take a girl of any appreciable caliber and tell her that her boyfriend plays Pokemon, and I can't imagine that relationship lasting.
16:32 < Vyacheslav> Tsukatu, he's bi.
16:32 <~Tsukatu> NOT SURPRISED
16:32 < TS> Hahaha.
16:32 <%incluye> Why is playing Pokemon bad?
16:32 < Vyacheslav> ...
16:32 < Vyacheslav> You're a dick.
16:32 < Donfuy> Hahahahaha.
16:32 <%incluye> Are you not supposed to be able to have fun after a certain age?
16:32 < Vyacheslav> No.
16:32 <%incluye> I've heard stuff like that, but I don't understand it.
16:33 < Vyacheslav> Tsukatu doesn't believe in fun. Don't you guys know that?
16:33 < Donfuy> I am laughing but I actually do not agree with Suki :<
16:33 < TS> People can have fun at any age, s'just meaning of the word kinda changes.
16:33 <~Tsukatu> incluye: There's tremendous amounts of fun to be had at and after 21, and none of it involves Pokemon. ;D
16:33 < Donfuy> ...and now I don't agree with PAvel either!
16:33 <%incluye> Pokemon is somewhat less dangerous.
16:33 < Vyacheslav> Donfuy, I'm obviously purposely said a false statement,
16:33 < Vyacheslav> *saying
16:33 <%incluye> I mean, unless you bring your GBA to a bar or something and some guy decides to beat you up for playing pokemon.
16:33 <%incluye> Which would...probably happen.
16:33 < Vyacheslav> Ahahaha.
16:33 < Donfuy> O_o
16:33 < TS> Nice scenario.
16:34 < Vyacheslav> Going to a bar with a GBC and saying to a babe, "Hey, check out my Level 100 Mewtwo."
16:34 < TS> Suki, what if the girl plays Pokemon too?
16:34 < Donfuy> Yeah like showing your /transparent/ Gameboy Color with those /flashy/ cables to impress a girl.
16:34 <~Tsukatu> TS: I already said "girl of any appreciable caliber."
16:34 <%incluye> She'd say "You gamesharked that. Try again, asshole"
16:34 < Donfuy> That kinda meks you a pedo.
16:34 <%incluye> Okaay.
16:34 < Vyacheslav> "Wanna trade pokemon with me? I have a cable."
16:34 < TS> You're saying geek girls aren't of appreciable caliber?
16:34 <~Tsukatu> Not at all!
16:34 <%incluye> Not a one.
16:35 < Donfuy> Haha you are weird!
16:35 <~Tsukatu> There are plenty. But none of them play Pokemon.
16:35 <%incluye> What about watching anime?
16:35 < Vyacheslav> Bad stereotype.
16:35 < spoon> Some geek girls are pretty good.
16:35 < TS> So many of them!
16:35 <~Tsukatu> spoon: Geek girls are amazing. I prefer geek girls.
16:35 < spoon> Though... Many of them aren't.
16:35 < spoon> I'm talking loks, btw.
16:35 < TS> Geek girls totally own airheads.
16:35 < spoon> Geeky chicks almost always win in personality.
16:35 < Donfuy> Animes? There are a /lot/ of high caliber girls
16:35 <~Tsukatu> But -- holy shit, contrary to popular opinion -- being obsessed with video games marketed to 9-year olds is NOT what makes you a geek.
16:36 < TS> Aye.
16:36 <~Tsukatu> Intelligence is what makes you a geek, not reading manga and playing video games.
16:36 < spoon> Aye aye.
16:36 < spoon> This is true.
16:36 < spoon> Suki, stop being right all the damned time. It's creeping me out.
16:36 <~Tsukatu> spoon: Never! If I can help it, anyway. :p
16:36 < TS> Lol, I suppose I picked the wrong type of geek.
16:37 <~Tsukatu> TS: Yeah, if she's a gamer / otaku, but isn't actually brainy, I'm afraid what you've got there is a loser, not a geek.
16:37 <~Tsukatu> Sorry, pal.
16:37 < TS> But could be both?
16:37 < spoon> Don't forget the almsot obligatory black nailpolish and/or hair dye.
16:38 <~Tsukatu> Anyway, look, all I'm saying is... I'm a very social person whose involved in very diverse social circles.
16:38 <~Tsukatu> Being hot and a nerd helps with that.
16:38 < spoon> Ahaha.
16:38 < TS> Hahah.
16:38 <~Tsukatu> I've hooked up with cheerleader stereotypes as well as played DBZ-based video games with the nerdiest of nerds for hours.
16:39 <~Tsukatu> And it's extremely rare that I run into a social group where mentioning Pokemon in casual conversation isn't a recipe for ostracism.
16:40 < Vyacheslav> The ideal geek woman:http://img1.tvloop.com/img/showpics/d8/ ... 1_5579.jpg
16:40 < Vyacheslav> http://img1.tvloop.com/img/showpics/d8/ ... 1_5579.jpg
16:40 < TS> Hm.
16:40 <~Tsukatu> I haven't clicked on those yet, but if all they feature is a girl playing video games, shame on you.
16:40 < Pinto> O_O
16:40 < Pinto> WOOOAAAAH
16:40 <~Tsukatu> Oh. Meh, she's alright.
16:40 < Vyacheslav> Pinto obviously never watched Mythbusters.
16:41 < TS> http://xkcd.com/178/
16:41 < Vyacheslav> Dude, Kari Byron is a Goddess.
16:41 < Pinto> Nope I didn't.
16:41 * Tsukatu rolls his eyes.
16:41 <~Tsukatu> You probably think Zooey is anything but grating on the nerves, too, don't you?
16:41 < TS> She does look a bit like her.
16:41 < TS> Wait, that actually is her?
16:42 <~Tsukatu> All it takes is a pretty enough face and a tolerance for social outcasts, and they're called goddesses. It's amazing.
16:42 <~Tsukatu> PROTIP: Social intelligence is a kind of intelligence.
16:42 <~Tsukatu> PROTIP: You don't have to be attractive, or anything close to it, to get attractive, intelligent women. It just helps. A lot.
16:44 < TS> Do you think the people in here understand what social intelligence is? :P
16:44 <~Tsukatu> Haha, yeah, I suppose not. :p
16:45 <~Tsukatu> Cuz look, I've had some insanely dork moments. I've had very involved conversations that I'd prefer no woman anywhere would hear me have.
16:45 <~Tsukatu> And I'm interested in many extremely unsociable things.
16:45 <~Tsukatu> Like, really, really interested.
16:45 <~Tsukatu> But I know when to bring it up and when to keep it to my fucking self.
16:45 <~Tsukatu> I know what to say in the company I keep.
16:46 < TS> Haha, good skill.
16:46 < Pinto> That's why you can love Pokemon and be socially successful.
16:46 <~Tsukatu> Of course!
16:46 <~Tsukatu> You can love erotic autoasphyxiation and be socially successful, too!
16:46 <~Tsukatu> Just don't ever bring it up in company you expect to ever hear from again!
16:46 < TS> Hah. Hahahah.
16:47 < TS> Although technically you couldn't bring it up if you had it.
16:47 < Destiny> ahahah
16:47 < Vyacheslav> Tsukatu, do you like Pokemon?
16:48 <~Tsukatu> Obviously there are crowds you can bring up your retarded sexual fantasies to, to boot. And there are crowds you can bring up your obsession with, if I may repeat myself for emphasis, games marketed to 9-year olds.
16:48 <~Tsukatu> But that's not *most* crowds.
16:48 <~Tsukatu> By any stretch of the imagination.
16:48 < Destiny> like here, we can talk about pokemon
16:48 <~Tsukatu> Vyacheslav: I enjoyed the gaming experience in Red and Blue when I was in middle school, but both bore me now.
16:48 < Destiny> but at college, i- I guess i can talk about pokemon there, too...
16:48 < Pinto> dude, they're marketed to 9 year olds. That doesn't mean they're /only and specifically/ for 9 year olds.
16:49 < Pinto> They're just the more likely to buy the games.
16:49 < Destiny> but anime!
16:49 < Destiny> people wouldnt like me talking about anime in college
16:49 <~Tsukatu> Pinto: Excuse me while I laugh hysterically at that excuse.
16:49 < Destiny> none of my friends watch anime
16:49 < Destiny> man, i'm totally talking to myself here ;_;
16:49 < Pinto> What excuse? I don't even play pokemon regularly!
16:49 <~Tsukatu> "Just because something is *intended* for 5th graders doesn't mean I can't buy it and enjoy it!"
16:49 <~Tsukatu> Like, I mean, sure, but... I mean...
16:50 <~Tsukatu> You must see how silly that is.
16:50 <~Tsukatu> Like, you have money, you're old enough to make your own decisions... you can choose to wear Pull-Ups if you *really want to*...
16:50 <~Tsukatu> But...
16:50 < Pinto> Hey, we're talking about Pokemon. There are a lot of older dudes who like pokemon. It's not just another game like Petz.
16:50 <%incluye> Pull-ups are really uncomfortable.
16:50 <~Tsukatu> What the fuck is Petz?
16:50 <~Tsukatu> Actually, nevermind, don't answer that.
16:50 <+Torex> There were 16-year olds there that said the exact same thing to cashiers when they bought Bionicles at the toy store.
16:50 < TS> I... don't know anyone who likes Pokemon.
16:51 <~Tsukatu> Just because Pull-Ups are marketed to toddlers doesn't mean you can't buy them and enjoy wearing them.
16:51 < Destiny> apart from getting them to fit, of course
16:51 <~Tsukatu> And you can probably lead a successful social life *while* wearing Pull-Ups.
16:51 <~Tsukatu> Just don't ever, ever bring it up in conversation.
...
17:21 <~Tsukatu> Wow. I can tell it's been frickin' AGES since I've cleaned out my music collection, because I've got some N*Sync songs here that I've had since middle school.
17:21 <~Tsukatu> "Hey hey! Bye bye bye!"
17:22 < Sunset> wow.
17:22 < Sunset> you're oldschool
17:22 < Pryvat_Cyan> hey man he wants it that way
17:22 <%incluye> That song!
17:22 <%incluye> That song is catchy.
17:22 <~Tsukatu> "You may hate me, but it ain't no lie! I wanna see you out that door, baby, bye-bye-bye!"
17:23 < Pinto> O_o
17:23 < remaniac> BYe BYE
17:23 <~Tsukatu> I am SO keeping this.
17:23 < Pinto> How could you like those songs in middle school.
17:23 <~Tsukatu> It is too old to embarrass me now.
17:23 < remaniac> haha
17:23 < Sunset> :P
17:23 < spoon> Ahahaha.
17:23 <~Tsukatu> It's to the point that people will safely assume that it's ironic.
17:23 <~Tsukatu> Like wearing a Pokemon shirt.
17:23 <~Tsukatu> Everyone knows that no one in their right mind would do that, so I *must* be joking.
17:24 < Pryvat_Cyan> dude their is this girl in my college that wears a gengar shirt
17:24 <~Tsukatu> Punch her.
17:24 <~Tsukatu> In the uterus.
17:24 < spoon> Fuck her.
17:24 < spoon> In the uterus.
17:24 <~Tsukatu> She must not be allowed to reproduce.
17:24 < Techno> That won't affect her
17:24 < Techno> Ghost types are impervious ot normal type
17:24 < Techno> to*
17:24 <~Tsukatu> AAAAUUUGHH
17:24 < Sunset> wow
17:24 <~Tsukatu> So use psychic WHY DO I KNOW THAT
17:25 < Techno> BECAUSE DEEP DOWN INSIDE
17:25 < Techno> YOU LIKE THE POKEMANS
...
17:39 <&Yanni> Tsukatu: Did you find the Pokemon comic you were talking about?
17:39 <~Tsukatu> Yanni: Not yet, gimme a bit.
17:39 <&Yanni> http://www.awkwardzombie.com/comic1-032910.php
17:39 <&Yanni> That's the one, I believe, Tsukatu.
17:40 <~Tsukatu> Yanni: Yeah, that's the very one. Thanks.

Pff, that chat log has you saying "I have never met" and "I don't know" and their variations so much. Your opinion of this game has more to do with your ignorance of it than anything else.

shin megami tensei: devil survivor (RPG)
mario and luigi: bowser's inside story (RPG, like paper mario kind of gameplay and humour)

DS Lite. It's the best when it comes to games, imo, and there are some great titles for it too (as previously said)
Besides, I've never been a playstation kind of guy. So it's DS for me.

I'm here to tell you both FF Tactics and Phantom Hourglass were cool.

preach on, brotha man, preach on!!Tsukatu wrote:Final Fantasy: Crisis Core was enough of a reason for me to get a PSP.
If you prefer games that take themselves much more seriously, go with the PSP.
my roomie and upstairs neighbor both have hacked PSP's and they constantly show me the awesome games they get on em, like crisis core and god of war.
but what REALLY gets me is the classic arcade games and snes games they shove on those things, the latest thats pushing me to splooge 150 on one is x men: children of the atom.... which i never played but looks AWESOME. not to mention that it can play music and movies.
im wondering if i could put skulltag on a psp...
but if i had to pick another fav handheld it would have to be the gameboy SD, im not really a fan of that dual screen stuff, and like suki said, happy, bouncy, candy cartoon characters :/

Yeah, clocking in on Tsukatu's side of things is this game, which approaches a level of subversive illegality and pure sickness.kai wrote:and like suki said, happy, bouncy, candy cartoon characters :/

What disturbs me the most is the knowledge that a team of developers probably struggled their way through a Computer Science degree and thereafter spent years in the industry attaining a mastery with the DS SDK (and probably machine code for its processor, if it was approved by Nintendo), and were then tasked with making a game like that.ghoulash wrote:Yeah, clocking in on Tsukatu's side of things is this game, which approaches a level of subversive illegality and pure sickness.
And that reminds me of this DVD I saw that depressed the hell out of me when I was in line at a local supermarket: Strawberry Shortcake's "Sky's the Limit". That's close to Pixar quality, if you ask me. I, personally, would probably never be able to have that kind of mastery of any kind of 3-d animation software or the process behind making a movie like that. And these are the ends all that knowledge is put to.
We truly live in a cold and cruel universe.

Incidentally the PSP is a better console I just wish it had more devs actually making stuff for it. Incidentally any one here play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite? That is awesome, kill your enemies and wear their heads as your hats.

Actually, nearly all of my friends have been playing pokemon lately (2nd year at uni). I'm actually the lone guy who hasn't, but that is more because I have a gaming capable PC with TF2, L4D/2, Borderlands, BC2, etc over me not wanting to play it. If I had some spare cash (and spare time) I'd probably go buy one of the new gold/silver remakes :PTsukatu wrote:GIANT IRC LOG
As for the actual discussion at hand, DS all the way.
I'd put it at less of a dissapointment, and just more of Phantom Hourglass. Which, since I had only played like an hour of Phantom Hourglass, is just fine with me! (Gift from christmas).Techno wrote:Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DO NOT GET SPIRIT TRACKS - it was disappoint)

Phantom Hourglass had at least -some- challenging parts, but Spirit Tracks had none. PH was much more memorable whereas the ST experience was forgettable. ST was just way to easy.smartalco wrote:I'd put it at less of a dissapointment, and just more of Phantom Hourglass.
