I was pretty apathetic about the whole music thing until I heard Mozart. Never been the same since. Now I listen to a combo of classical and Beatles; the latter was introduced via a friend.
http://greenbrown.bandcamp.comPeople write to me and say, "I’m giving up, you’re not talking to me." I just write them a simple message like, "Never give up," you know? And it changes their life

My mom loves hip-hop, so that was played to death around me when I was younger. My dad was a rapper, too, but now he's more into music production, not actually rapping. In a way, the fact that I listened to usher and TLC and all that as a child has really... Formed most of my dusgust for most hip-hop. but it really has influenced me, what with the musical styles I prefer, and the type of music I, myself, make.
I never really liked music until about two years ago, when I went over to a friends house and played Guitar Hero for the first time. I wasn't very good, but I completed Easy, and graduated to Medium that very nght. It felt good. It felt really good. From there, I listened mostly to rock. Mostly bands off of what I heard from GH. Then I started to sort of... Experiment, getting into alternative. Coldplay is my favorite because of this. then, when I got a little more... Involved into this community, I got even more into the music thing, listening to people like Venetian Snares, My Bloody valentine, Autolux, and countless others. just from hanging out in #music and listening to those dudes talk. Many thanks to Tanner, Slaps, Skyline, and Techno, among others (Donfuy <3) for expanding my horizons on such things.
Now, I like, in a somewhat literal sense, almost every type of music out there, barring most hip-hop. I dunno why.
But yeah. I suppose the overall "black" influence on me has lead to my love of, say, Gorillaz, or Maroon 5. (Yes, I said Maroon 5). But I still dislike most rap, oddly enough. I mean, I like some "Danger Doom, for example) but almost never do I actually like rap.

This community has done a lot for me musically (and in effect of this emotionally)! After asking for music recommendations in #n one day, LittleViking pointed me in the right direction, and since then, several community members such as Yahoozy, Borealis, KinGAleX, southpaw, and rocket_thumped have all fed me plenty of great bands. I've even done a bit of personal exploration!

Yeah, same. From there on, I've grown to find other bands, and loved them, too.Fast forward a while and I met palemoon and sidke, who got me in to j-core.

It'd be appropriate, but the guy's a bit too young.SlappyMcGee wrote:Until the end of this, I was going to suppose that your father -was- Danger Mouse.Might wrote:My mom loves hip-hop, so that was played to death around me when I was younger. as a technician, my dad fixes TVs, VCRs, Monitors and the like. one day a man came by to the shop and dumped off three mp3 players he didn't want. I was given one of them, and I managed to grab onto "Polygon Window" by Aphex Twin while sifting through the masses of Metallica and Stompin' Tom Connors that the man had put onto the mp3 prior. after two years of research and apprehension, and I finally received drukqs for Christmas and I listen to it on New Years Eve 2008. That's what got me back into music in general, and electronic genre as well.
A few summers ago while on the bus to summer camp at the provincial university, I catch a glimpse of a promotional poster for k-os's Joyful Rebellion on a store window. I had heard of "Crabukkit" at the time (a song which I now loathe because my city's false hip-hop/pop-rock radio station will only play this song by him -- even though he's got other, better singles out there) and I received the album on some birthday or other. I listened to the album, at 12 years of age, hated it, and forgot about the album until March of this past year. I decided to give it another listen and was blown away. that is what got me into underground hip-hop.
So last year in the advanced English class, the teacher gave us this assignment to choose a song that fits the mood of IV. iii in Macbeth. the next day my buddy plays "Cryptochid" by Marilyn Manson, and I became attracted to the grotesque melody of the song. I asked him about it, and he subsequently lent me Antichrist Superstar. I didn't know what to think of it after the first listen, but rest assured it is a legendary compilation of tracks that details the problems extensive of the Western world. That is what got me into metal.
and of course, the metanet community has greatly increased my musical awareness. I thank you all for that.

I got into classic rock because I was friends with kids in high school who were into classic rock, I got into indie after Skyline linked me to Catapult Calypso which sounded awesome, and I got into dubstep after multiple recommendations on 420chan /m/.

The first band I ever got into were the Tragically Hip.
This meant that I was ostracized from almost every musical community on the net, aside from the Hip's own forum, which I was always too intimidated to join. Because of that I've always had to make my own musical tastes. Which is why I'm so fucked today.

My dad. One of my earliest memories is him playing Eminem, Outkast, At The Drive In, Rush, BOC, and so many others that I still listen to/branched out from. (very diverse taste?)

My dad had a huge collection of vinyl records and when i was little i would always go through them and pick ones for him to play (Mostly based on the cover art) and through years of doing this i found:
the albumExit by Tangerine Dream - the first electronic music i ever heard and the base for my love of it today!
the album Broadsword And The Beast by Jethro Tull - One of my dad's favorites. my parents still play this at their house all the time.
And then since joining metanet my music collection has about doubled with all sorts of stuff. You guys are all awesome.

The Metanet Playlist run on the old forums where we voted for a song for each letter of the alphabet. That was where I found about artists like the Arcade Fire and The Decemberists, and have been listening to that kind of music ever since.

I think I also have to give the Metanet community a large part of my growth in music tastes. I came here with ~60 songs, and now I have a library around 4000 songs.
Thanks you Metanesters.
