"Formal", Subjectively

[11:37pm] TwilightSparkle: Sunset, it's because of your horrible avatar.
[11:37pm] Sordamente: I think I'm one of the only people with a "formal" avatar.
[11:37pm] Sordamente: I guess I could say.
[11:38pm] Sunset: lol maxson
[11:38pm] Sunset: scroo yoo
[11:38pm] Sunset: uh
[11:38pm] Sunset: i have a formal avatar
[11:38pm] Sunset: ._______.
[11:39pm] TwilightSparkle: Oh, that reminds me. I need to resize this pic so it fits in the avatar specs for the forums.
[11:40pm] Sordamente: um that's clearly pink hair.
[11:40pm] Sordamente: and no, how can you say that's formal in any way?
[11:40pm] Sunset: how can /you/ say it
[11:40pm] Sunset: 's /not/?
[11:40pm] TwilightSparkle: http://forum.droni.es/memberlist.php?mo ... file&u=508
[11:40pm] TwilightSparkle: Sordamente, what do you mean by "formal"?
[11:41pm] TwilightSparkle: I mean, it's an internet forum, not a college graduation.
[11:41pm] Sordamente: it's a drawing of a blushing anime girl with pink hair.
[11:41pm] Sordamente: heh
[11:41pm] Sordamente: um
[11:41pm] Sordamente: wait a minute.
[11:41pm] TwilightSparkle: It's a drawing of a humanized Fluttershy.
[11:41pm] TwilightSparkle: Therefore horrible.
[11:41pm] TwilightSparkle: Humanized ponies = atrocity.
[11:43pm] Sordamente: this is the best I could come up with, but I think it goes with what I was trying to say:
[11:43pm] Sordamente: a : belonging to or constituting the form or essence of a thing <formal cause>
[11:44pm] Sunset: maybe you don't think it's formal but i do
[11:44pm] Sordamente: well okay.

So that's pretty much the conversation. I suppose, to actually start off with something, what do you think of when you hear (see) the word "formal"? Is it just based on the fact that both mine and Sunset's subjectivity is so different it'd just automatically come to us arguing which avatar is formal or not? Or did I miss the target completely? Maybe I'm just thinking that if you spend enough time on something, it becomes a "form", which in turn, becomes something "formal" to YOU. But in time, there ends up being the more popular "forms", and then of course, the less approaching, less popular "forms". Or at least, the ones that never caught on as well.

Mine /
His, /

I'm probably just over-analyzing things, as usual. :s
But if you have anything to add, or if you can answer any of the questions, please do.

Something which is formal is something which adheres to an established form. When you're talking about a forum avatar, I wouldn't think there is such a thing and thus the discussion is meaningless. The only thing I can imagine calling a "formal" avatar would perhaps be a headshot.

And yeah, you're definitely overanalysing things. I mean, when talking of formality, you can't have individual subjective 'forms'. Formal is formal. If there's a lack of accordance, nothing is formal.

I disagree. That was irritating too, but it didn't make me froth with rage like his current one does.

It's just a girl with purple hair. But I don't know where it's from, so it doesn't bother me too much.

In my defense, my original "fanboi"ing was in IRC, on #moa, where you never are. Erik was the one who decided to take it to the forums. :p

No idea, but they must be pretty big since even Stephen Colbert had a shout out to all his "bronies."

This is formally ridiculous.
