neon genesis evangelion is immense *---*
i just got every single episode (including the movies) for my birthday a few days ago :D im addicted to it. Anyway, its not really commercial in the sense its generic, its commercial because its popular, and its popular because its AWESOME!!! every time i watch it i see something new, or find a sub plot i never realised before :D

100% recommended


cowboy bebop is very good as well, though the movie is quite frankly terrible.

Another recommendation is "princess mononoke" which is an epic studio ghibli film, think akira set in a world where humans live alongside gods and demons.

Furthermore i recommend elfen lied, i find the manga best, but the animes ok. A warning though, elfen lied is not to be watched when your family/non-anime-loving-friends are around. The first half hour of the first episode entails a naked girl running round tearing people apart with her mind....

and finally i recommend death note, which if you havn't watched yet, watch now! its very quick and smart, with a lot of plot twists and a load of memorable characters. Unfortuantly, death note becomes rubbish after episode 25... people who've seen it will know what i mean...

I watched a bunch of Bebop recently, as well as the movie.
I'm not a fan, and do not recommend it.

It's just so... empty. There's no conflict or drama, or really anything that makes you relate to the character, and no one ends up learning anything or improving. He starts off a sane and well-balanced badass with no internal conflicts who is capable of kicking everyone's ass without much of a struggle, and then you watch him walk around being calm and kicking everyone's ass without much of a struggle. It's friggin' boring. No one grows or has any learning experiences.
Ed is cool, though.

anyway, cowboy bebop isn't about the growth of the character, its more about discovering a character, as spike is a lot deeper than he first appears. Also this anime has some real tear jerking scenes.

i admit it isn't very complex, but its a nice light hearted action/sci fi anime to get your teeth into :D

Conflict is such a western way of showing character growth.

As opposed to what? It's not like the Eastern world is so alien to the Western world that we couldn't possibly begin to comprehend it. At the very least, you appear to understand it, and I'm way prettier than you, and therefore smarter.
Besides, I didn't say "there's no conflict, therefore there's no growth," but rather "there's no conflict, and neither is there any growth." There's very little that interesting in a story that's just describing a character that the director made up. That's like coming to a D&D game and having everyone take turns reading out their stats instead of playing for character development with in-game and numerical experience. I want to see people be forced into puting some effort into adapting to a new challenge, not "check out this cool guy I made," where the character starts off already capable of handling the conflicts that will be thrown at him.

i recommend a little-gem-of-an-anime, with the name "genocyber"

it involves two sisters and their light hearted antics, one who is intelligent, the other is feral. They get into a lot of sticky situations, such as falling over, morphing into a nasty alien creature who brings doom to the world by ripping out peoples spines through their faces, as well as spilling coke on their new shirts. Oh, they are so so silly :3

(but seriously, don't go near this one with a barge pole unless your prepared for extreme violence)

FLCL makes a great complement to Paranoia Agent. I recommend watching it right after or as soon after Paranoia Agent as you can. Oh and Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, too. While we're going down the randomness line, Mind Game is definitely a must-watch. I'd suggest more, but this selection is good.

the way sidke phrased it, it sounded like flcl was a sequel or something, and i tried watching paranoia agent but i couldn't get into it, i'll have another go later though...

I think i just like fooly cooly because its made by the same people who made neon genesis (the same animators, or studio, or scriptwriters, or something the same, i've forgotten) and flcl feels similar to neon genesis to me, although obviously it is totally different storyline wise.

One anime i do recommend is excel saga, its a little crazy, and not much makes sense, such as the main character killing the animator. Its not a thinking anime, its just funny, and visually its very exciting ^^

I'd say flcl complements neon genesis evangelions. Its nice after watching a epic anime that questions the meaning of life and how man was created, to sit back and watch takkun get hit on the head repeatadly until robots pop out
