OutRank.me

I don't know if any of you will be at all interested in this, but figured I'd post it up here to get some opinions/suggestions!

I've always been a fan of image boards (like 4chan, etc), and for a while now have wanted to learn CSS and PHP. A few days ago I decided to combine the two...

Image

I've created OutRank.me in an attempt to modernise the dull 2001-look most image boards have, and create a whole new era of such boards (or something like that anyway).
The board is primarily aimed at gamers and animé fans, and I have no plans of including any NSFW boards.

Current Development
  • Set up homepage.
  • Set up individual boards.
  • Rules.
  • FAQ. - 25% done.
  • 'Latest posts' on homepage. - Not fully tested.
  • User accounts.
  • Easier moderation.
  • Polls.
  • Report system.
  • Thumbnail transparency.
  • More layout themes.
I'd literally never used PHP before Monday, and CSS is something I only knew the total basics of.

> Why does the world need yet another image board?
I created the site with the goal of modernising such boards. The Futaba layout most boards use was created over 9 years ago, and the internet has changed a lot since then!
As mentioned above, I have big plans for the future of the site which will hopefully make OutRank.me stand out above the rest!

> That image... Why doesn't the site look like that for me?
The site looks like that on browsers that support CSS3 shadows and rounded borders. At the moment I believe the only two browsers which currently support both are Opera and Google Chrome.
You will also need Javascript enabled for certain effects - like tooltips.

> Isn't anonymity a big thing on these boards? Wouldn't user accounts rule that out completely?
Not at all! Anonymity will still be a big thing, and revealing information about oneself is entirely optional. The only information that will be displayed to the public (at first, at least) will be post count - which I'm sure some of you will be interested in.

> How is the site funded?
The site is entirely funded by myself and is something I'm dedicating my free time to. I'm currently not making any money from the site, but may add discrete advertisements in the future purely to cover the site hosting costs.
LF EDIT:

Other than to troll, is there any reason behind your post?

I hear you make more money from continuous advertisements.
Whichever way you go, I think people would appreciate it if they were discreet.

Less white please.

In fact a skin/color scheme option would be nice, I pefer white text on dark backgrounds.

I plan on adding more css styles in future. For the moment on the image boards you can switch between the current style and the default Futaba style.

Or: no NSFW, no userbase.

Man, there were huge flamewars every time a major chan decided to get rid of frames. That's right, these kids couldn't stand the loss of their 1995-style organization scheme. The prettiest chan right now is 420chan, because Kirt is never happy with the way it looks and so changes it every week.

I don't think you're going to bring in users via a shiny website. You can bring in users by building a good community that people want to be a part of. Or, failing that, just by being the only place people can go to act depraved and insane.

Even if he had a /b/ *and* a NSFW userbase, the board is still going to be a small board. I don't think he's going for the "Appeal to Fucktards" option. I think he's trying to legitimately make a *good* imageboard.

I'm fully in support of this. Yes, that's right, I'll say it again. I think this is an awesome idea.

Here's something, if you enter the wrong verification code it clears the text box. It'd be nice if it saved it.

Good idea. I submitted an image from Little Nemo Dream Master.

I started a wallpaper thread in /w/, but for some reason the first few posts were removed almost instantly. ;_;

One of my friends was having problems with the verification code too. I'll probably replace it with Google's reCAPTCHA at some point - but for now I'll remove it completely.

This thread? I'm able to reply to it with no problems. Are you sure you weren't getting an error when submitting?
I'll up the file size restriction to 5000KB, just in-case that was the problem.

--

Today I plan to work on a member system, but with my limited PHP knowledge I doubt it will be fully implemented for a while.
I'll also work on something that shows latest replies on the homepage - not quite sure how I'm going to add it in though yet without making the homepage too big; I'm not a fan of huge homepages and would like to keep it simplistic and small.

Here are the latest updates to the site, if anyone's interested.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far!

i will be frank :C
while i respect your goal and efforts, taking the apple-approach to solving problems by rounding corners doesn't actually fix anything
you could have a perfectly reasonable group of posters using vanilla futaba, or making a new one by adding more than just border-radius to frames
(speaking of border-radius, you can support firefox with -moz-border-radius)
i am probably speaking too soon, so i look forward to further changes and urge you to stay away from the generic web 2.0 gradients. if you want it to stand out, that is
good job with just starting out, though

The only part of the site that doesn't work in Firefox is box shadowing. The rounded borders work fine for me in Firefox 3.5 - so I'm not sure what you're on about.

I've now made it so .swf files can be uploaded in the Flash section.

i couldn't have been assed to actually read what you wrote, i just saw "css3... borders... only... opera and chrome"
hell i don't even use firefox, i was just trying to help. don't worry, i won't do that again

This is very neat. And it actually looks sane, which is more than I can say for anything else *cough 4chan* that I've come across in the past.

Totally agree with this. I grabbed the first post with a wallpaper, by the way.

Also, I like your ad on NUMA. Very cool. :D

Aside from taking ages to respond to emails (been waiting 6 days now), ProjectWonderful is pretty awesome.

I haven't done anything new with the site for the last few days, and probably won't until the weekend. I move back to uni on Thursday and as I was working nights throughout July and August, I've been trying to fit in whatever outside-uni social activity I can.

Question #1: Is your name James Donnelly? if not,
Question #2: Who jacked your website?
