Just shown to the public today. I really think it's a POS for several reasons. Supposedly, this is a rival to Windows 7 tablets...
-Essentially, it's a bigger iTouch
-No USB or Firewire... still using that 30-pin connector?
-16GB starting at $500... is this 2001? 32GB at $600, 64GB at $700.
-1GHz processor... also, laptops came with these around 2001
-No RAM upgrades
-Same ol' typical non-removable battery we expect from Apple
-Uses the iPhone/iTouch OS instead of Snow Leopard
-AT&T has plans starting at $14.99/month for... 250mb a month?
What a letdown. My friend put it nicely: "I don't see anything it can do that my iphone can't."

That OS path they took was terrible. I'd much rather prefer a watered down OS X.
And $15 a month for 250 mb? Haha. Have fun with your monthly 25 low quality Youtube videos.
And when you say no RAM upgrades, do you mean no upgrade from the iPhone? If so, that's pathetic.

I've heard that those who got their hands on it at the conference say it had some scaling issues using regular iPhone apps, which is supposed to be the big sell. :/

Also, AT&T has an unlimited data for $30 (same as the iPhone). And it's also SIM unlocked, so it can go everywhere but Verizon.
I dunno. Rather would get a laptop.

Yeah I wanted a watered down Snow Leopard as well. I'm not sure about how much RAM it has, but I meant that you cannot physically upgrade the RAM.Techno wrote:That OS path they took was terrible. I'd much rather prefer a watered down OS X.

EDIT: Just read the last post. I'd rather buy a netbook for $300. More utility, faster, much more HD space, no stupid contracts, etc.

Not unless it comes pre-loaded with the same YouTube app from the iPhone. It doesn't support flash. What a gimmick.Techno wrote:And $15 a month for 250 mb? Haha. Have fun with your monthly 25 low quality Youtube videos..

You'll still use data getting the videos from the internet.capt_weasle wrote:Not unless it comes pre-loaded with the same YouTube app from the iPhone. It doesn't support flash. What a gimmick.Techno wrote:And $15 a month for 250 mb? Haha. Have fun with your monthly 25 low quality Youtube videos..

The joke here, Techno, is that you wouldn't even be able to view Youtube videos. Try and be less oblivious.Techno wrote:You'll still use data getting the videos from the internet.capt_weasle wrote:Not unless it comes pre-loaded with the same YouTube app from the iPhone. Do you know the feeling that you feel something is unexplainabelly wrong? Yeah. That's the /exact/ thing what I thought and felt when I saw this.

I don't think it's fair to compare the iPad to the iPhone and the Macbook. How does it stack up against other tablets?

I am not going to say I'm not disappointed, because I am. The biggest failure here is probably the lack of multitasking.
I would like to say that this is not like most tablet PCs, who are simply just laptops without a keyboard. The fact that it doesn't run OS X isn't that much of a disappointment to me. I mean, what would be the advantages of it, besides multitasking?
USB ports? Why would I need USB ports on it? Wait wait wait, yeah, it's going to be awful when you want to put something in it and you can't use a pen drive.
Also, I wouldn't need more than 16GB of storage on a thing like this myself.

I have to agree with Donfuy here. Except that I don't care about the lack of USB ports. I'm optimistic though. I think the next version of the iPad will have multitasking + other "missing" features, in the same way that the iPod touch gained a whole bunch of features the second time around. (via software update)

I'm just going to echo everything said here. No Flash, no multitasking, no USB. That's a dealbreaker, ladies!

Oh, that's interesting. Apparently, you'll be able to make free VoIP calls over 3G now, (i.e. via iCall (third party)). Does this mean that Google voice might be in the picture?

I would have expected Apple to push the whole "you can *draw* on this" aspect harder, considering one of their prime targets is wannabe artists.

First off: I agree this is a little underwhelming, and have no intentions of buying one
But you are all kinda missing the point. This thing is basically a netbook smashed together with an ebook reader. It isn't meant to be your primary device, not even secondary if you do a decent amount of work. It is for those people who want a way to access the internet, email, books, music, whatever when they aren't near their computer (or don't want to lug around a laptop, which weigh considerably more). Ie: exactly the same people who would want an iTouch, not to carry in their pocketm but set next to the couch; which is convenient because that is pretty much exactly what it is. Given that most people with multiple computers have one they would consider their 'main' computer, and have pretty much every digital possession they have on that computer (I do this and my secondary machine is a plenty-capable laptop), why do you actually need USB (or the other things you listed)? The iTouch doesn't have it, and no one complains.
Where I could see this making a killing is next August. Apparently Apple has shittons of textbooks lined up; what if instead of carrying around 5 books throughout the week, you just carried this around? I spent nearly this much money on books this semester anyway, and digital versions better be cheaper.
Although I do so so wish this was actually an Apple tablet running fullblown OS X, because that is all I really want :/

Scratch that, just read up on some feedback and shit.
Will reserve judgement until 2nd or 3rd gen, although I'm not sure why they can't just wait and develop a more feature rich product first-shot.
