I'm (hopefully) going to be able to purchase a new phone soon, so I was looking in to what I could buy. I have AT&T, and I'm looking for as cheap a phone that I can get, but with lots of things that I would need/want. Currently my favorites that I'm looking at right now are the iPhone 3G and the Samsung Impression.

If anyone has any advice or criticisms about these two phones, please, feel free to reply. However, I would prefer not to have a topic filled with arguments over whether the iPhone is good or not (lets let everyone have their own opinions). Also, if there is a phone that you are aware of that is very good, and you think that I would like it, then feel free to comment here, as well.

iPhone3GS.

Lotza new stuff. Though, it's better than both iPhone 3G and Samsung one.
If used well, definately worth it's price.

What's that new one? Like the Sprint Pri or something. That looks cool. I hear it's loads better than an iPhone - faster and can have multiple windows up in a computer-esque fashion.
People write to me and say, "I’m giving up, you’re not talking to me." I just write them a simple message like, "Never give up," you know? And it changes their life

Oh, yeah, I was wondering about that. Just exactly what other things does the 3GS have? I know that it has a 3 megapixel camera as opposed to 2, and that it has voice commands (or whatever it is), and a compass (if that wasn't already on the 3G). I do also know that it is faster than the 3G, but surely it's not that much faster that it's worth an extra 100$, is it? Also, the space upgrade I don't care about, as I'm not going to be needing space for music, mostly (as I have an iPod already).

Are you talking about the Palm Pre? If it's Sprint, though, I won't be able to get it - I have AT&T.

The 3gs has double the memory of the 3g (processing memory, not storage capacity*), has a 3.2 megapixel camera with touch focus, video recording, compass etc. Also, where do you live? If you are in the UK, then I would recommend waiting until the iPhone comes out on Orange, which it will be doing so very soon and by christmas. Orange's 3g coverage kicks o2's ass. o2's 3g coverage is the one of the worst coverages out of any of the operators in the UK. That's what I'm doing.

To summarize my opinion, iPhone 3GS on Orange.

EDIT: Just noticed you mentioned AT&T, so ignore the network recommendations. But still get the iPhone. Also just watched what Yanni posted. There is a shitload of things that the iPhone doesn't do, but this still cannot change the fact that the iPhone is an incredible device. People are always ready to bash the iPhone, but you can't overlook how popular it is. Most other phones just try so hard to be as much like the iPhone as they can, because it's a good phone. If it was so bad then everyone else wouldn't be trying to copy it.

The nokia 5320 would be my choice if I were on a GSM network. It can run SNES and Game Boy Advance games via emulators, can hold up to 16 gigs (on a hot-swappable microSD), plays flac and ogg files, costs $185 unlocked (and much cheaper from your mobile provider), and has a huge pile of software available (albeit from a very ugly website). It also supports Adobe Flash, so Youtube and Vimeo work like they should.

The nokia 5530 gives you all that with a touchscreen for about $80 more unlocked (and still probably well under $150 from at&t). The nokia 5730 drops the touchscreen in favor of a full QWERTY keyboard.

Related comparison of Nokia's products with Apple's.

Yeah, hold out for the Droid or get the Hero. Or if you like WinMo go with the HD2

He said At&t, so I figure his mommy's buying the phone for him and paying for the plan. Droid is a Verizon (CDMA) phone. The Hero would be a good choice, though.
