My shitty phone

I recently started using TPG for my internet (ADSL2+), as far as I know it's quite fast and good.

But...

Every time someone in my house uses the cordless phone, the DSL disconnects. I've tested this with the cord phone and it does not disconnect my internet.
Can anyone help?

You use wireless?

I have the exact same problem for a long time. And yeah, mine is wireless.

I use a wireless router.

Your cordless phone may be interfering with your wireless. What frequency is your phone? (Most these days are either 2.4 or 5.8GHz)

Switch to a DECT cordless phone. This will minimize overlap with WiFi. DECT phones are usually clearly marked as such ("DECT" in most of the world or "DECT 6.0" in the United States).

I just got this same issue today, and it was caused by the phone's signal interfering with the wireless, as digits so succinctly said.

I'm pretty sure it's 5.8Ghz, and I've always thought the signal might be interfering, but is there any way I can get rid of this problem without buying a completely new phone?

I had a brief look at the TPG site and found this FAQ entry, perhaps not relevant since you're talking wireless interference.
Does a cordless phone work with the ADSL device?
You require a central filter for each cordless phone attached to your nominated ADSL line. The central filter is available from TPG for $25 each.

The fact that the corded phone makes me suspect that the line itself is not an issue, UNLESS the cordless phone does not have a filter. I wouldn't suspect this initially, because DSL installers always take care of these things. But if you self-installed or just had an bad installer, it could be an issue. Check and see if there's a small device on the phone line between the corded phone and the wall, or if a new wallplate has been installed (particularly if it's thicker than normal). There should be such a device on both phones. Typically a missing filter will just degrade telephone call quality, but I suppose it could cause problems with the internet connection. Also, $25 is a ridiculous price. They're like $5 on the web and not much more than that from most brick-and-mortar stores.

My corded phone is connected to my fax/printer, and that is connected to the wall phone jack. I've just checked, and there is a small rectangular box thing on it that says ADSL micro filter. I can also confirm that there are none of these filters on my cordless phone central device thingy that controls the two handsets. So that means I should get a filter for the cordless phone?

*EDIT*

I dug out one of these that came with my router (All this shit started happening after I got the router) http://www.i-tech.com.au/Library/Image/ ... EM1550.jpg
and assuming it acted as both an in-line splitter (if thats what you call it) and a filter I used it with my cordless phone. I tested it and nothing happened, the DSL still disconnected. Was I using the wrong type of filter? Or was I using the right filter but the problem wasn't with the filter anyway?

I would expect that to function as a filter if it came with an ADSL device. Nonetheless, does it say "filter" on it anywhere?

I had this problem when I got DSL initially as well. I can't remember for the life of me what the solution was.

It does say filter on it, I assumed it was a sort of two in one device that split the line from your phone wall jack thingy into two lines, one going to your router and one to your phone that was also a filter.

That should work then. that makes it sound like wifi troubles. Can you wire a computer to the modem to see what happens?

You mean wire a computer to the router?
There is already a laptop and desktop connected via ethernet to the router.

And wired machines do the same thing? well that kills the wifi theory. Well, you know what assuming does...

My wired phone works fine, the wireless ones don't.

okay, it occurs to me that I failed at typing in the last post and produced a sentence that made no sense. I'll retry.
Are the computers connected wirelessly or via ethernet?
