I was just thinking how great this could be if it was extended to something like a desktop app or something of the sort. Maybe an extension to other social networking sites but also holding its own as a collaboration tool.SlappyMcGee wrote:But certainly not -the majority- of people are calling it that. I'm hearing a lot of tech types talking about the slight benefits of Google Wave, but unless there is a major incentive to change, it's a failure. It's a social networking program, and whether it does that the best is entirely dependent on the number of people who are part of it.Flight wrote:
Lot's of people are calling this the best collaboration platform yet.

Really? Because I'd call it about the only collaboration platform of its kind yet. (There are places where you can mass upload documents for collaboration, and there are places where you can collaboratively edit documents in real time, but nothing that has quite the same set of stuff as what Wave is).Flight wrote:Lot's of people are calling this the best collaboration platform yet.
I'm also wondering how this is social networking? The idea that they are in competition with facebook is absurd.

So, you need people to convert over to your system if you want people to merge these things using your system. What I'm saying, is, is that the instant messaging and social networking isn't at par with a lot of other programs/websites, which means that real-time document editing isn't a good enough reason to get rid of the extra features of those other websites. And one of the best examples is Facebook; it's best feature being its huge userbase.

SharePoint serves a similar purpose, but works better in a office environment.
Zimbra has been an option. And RedMine can be especially useful in software development projects.
BaseCamp is pretty popular as well.

i've been using it for some time. I wouldn't call it revolutionary but I like it a lot. so far i've:
* organised some days out, deciding on movies and restaurants and stuff, which worked very smoothly with the yes/no/maybe gadget and the ability to edit posts for summary, and chat inline.
* used it for general IM. the live typing eliminates the annoying problem where you have a message half typed out when someone posts something that obsoletes what you were going to say, and the way you can easily add new people to a chat is nice.
* collaborated on a very basic design document for a small game a friend is making. this is what wave seems to be really made for but in its current incarnation i found it a little clunky with stuff being difficult to undo or remove, and collapsibles defaulting to open, so things get messy very fast. it's also nothing like as good and full-featured as a word processor for creating documents but hopefully that's something google is working on as a priority
the general sluggishness and the low user base are very big problems though.
