2010 wasn't the best year for me, but it was an outstanding year for audiophiles like myself. I made about a dozen playlists in attempts to categorize all of the music I discovered, but I had to a lot of genre-bending to make it all fit nicely. I was also going to go into detail on some of the songs, but iTunes decided to be a bitch and deleted the tags I used to sort them.

One album which I couldn't add was Girl Talk's All Day because I couldn't choose a favorite track. And U Smile (Ambient Version) was the track I used to fall asleep most nights. I'll go out on a limb and say this is about 95% accurate. There might be songs released last year, or singles for albums coming out next year. But I've spent weeks compiling this, so it's about as good as I can make it. (That and I already submitted the playlists.) But I'd like to get some feedback. Was there any music I missed? (The answer is yes, I still have a few albums to listen to. But I'll take suggestions.)

PS: PM me or get me on IRC if you see any inaccuracies or spelling mistakes. Those I will fix.

I'm really confused by your genre distinctions. Sufjan Stevens is not indie pop? Indie pop is not indie rock? Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) is indie rock even though it's synth-based? Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Yeasayer are more experimental than they are indie pop or indie rock? Lo fi and chillwave (more specifically Beach House) are not indie rock or indie pop?

I mean, did you actually consider what you were doing when you made these separate (?) categories or did you just go by some strange intuition?

I used Last.fm's tags mostly. As I said, you might not agree with the 'labels' I used for certain artists, but it's how I chose to distinguish them. I could've made one big playlist I guess, but I wanted to break them up into hour-long mixes instead.

last.fm says Ke$ha is the best artist of 2010. I wouldn't listen to what they say about anything.

Unsurprisingly, no one is seeding your torrent.

Having synths has next to nothing to do with whether it's considered indie pop or not, no matter how ambiguous genres can be, being "indie pop" has to do with the emotion or mood of the song. It's more upbeat and carefree, and Sprawl II is anything but that.

Just like you pointed out to Tanner about Jazz, the way genres are defined changes over time. Indie pop in the 80s != indie pop now, which is considered more of a twee genre.

EDIT:
AllMusic wrote:Indie Pop reflects the underground's softer, sweeter side
Wikipedia wrote:Unlike Indie rock, Indie pop is more melodic, less noisy, and relatively angst-free. [...] what commentators called the "revolt into childhood" of its followers.

Okay, That's a fair point about me referencing something twenty years old.

But I was really just doing so because your point is fucking ridiculous. Genres are not defined by their mood or lyrical content. For more recent examples of depressed indie pop, check out Fleet Foxes, Lykke Li, Death Cab for Cutie, Belle and Sebastien, or Bon Iver? Pop is a huge genre. Indie is a huge buzzword. You are a silly dude.

I never said anything about lyrics, Belle & Sebastian have plenty of depressing lyrics and have melodic, angst-free instrumentation and mood. But you're right in that Indie Pop's a big enough genre it's almost impossible to defined, I was looking at it from more of the twee pop angle.

Wikipedia's definition I slapped down instead of rephrasing it in an intelligible way like I should have. Like, more melodic and less abrasive musically.

I think the point I'm trying to make is that synths are a lot more important to what makes indie pop indie pop than lyrical content, which is what you seemed to argue much higher. When you refer to the mood of the music, you are either making assumptions about the general brightness of certain chords, or moreover, are referring to the lyrics.

The former of those two options. Synths are used a lot in pop music, mainstream or not; I was just calling Skyline on the fact that just because a song has synths means it's indie pop. You can use them in virtually any genre, just like electric guitars don't make a song be rock, and violins don't make it classical.

LISTENING TO GOOD MUSIC.

I've started listening to these and sifting out the ones I like.
I finished listening through Electronica (as much as I needed to each song to figure out whether I'd keep it, anyway), and I only kept King Night. Just about all the others are supergay.

Next I'm going to do a cursory listen-through of Folk Rock, Indie Rock, and other genres I don't normally go for, just to see if I'm surprised by something. I doubt I'll keep much of any of it, though.

Even though I'm pessimistic about this entire collection, thanks for providing this. I may very well end up pursuing some of these artists to find more of their work.

EDIT: Oookay, and somehow "Female Vocalists" is supergayer. And I thought I was being a little weird keeping some Within Temptation just because I thought the vocalist had an amazing voice.

EDIT 2: Jesus fucking Christ, why did no one warn me that this was basically ~all pseudo-bluegrass emofag shit? What exactly were your criteria for dividing these into their genres? These aren't so much genre labels as they are LIES.

I mean, take a second to consider this:

What is this? What the fuck is this?
This is not music. This is a narration of a 6 year old's description of his day to the tune of a fucking banjo. And it is representative of 90% of your music, across all "genres" you listed.
Why would you do this? Why did this seem like a good idea to you?

I can't listen to the audio post, but seriously. Think about who I am, or who you think I am. We don't have much in common, least of all musical tastes. I hope for your sake that you didn't come into this expecting to like every single song. I think "King Night" was an off-chance that I happened to find and like. But I'm glad that one song did fit your liking.

Suki, this is the second time in as many weeks that you've come into either the music or the entertainment forums and been a total asshole about something. You should learn how to express your opinion without being a ridiculous cunt. You also used the words "gay" and "fag" in a negative connotation which is strictly against forum rules.

Yeah, this is pretty sad. Staff probably should be quality members of the forums. :/

Good point. I have removed the torrent and Zip. The 8Track thing is their prerogative.
