New Guitar!

It's pretty awesome. It's a Norma Barney Kessel, it's kinda between a (semi) Goya Rangemaster and a Gibson Barney Kessel. Plays really nice, couple of kinks due to age (60s), but overall it's sick.

There is a lot of junk in that trunk, I prefer my guitars somewhat smaller around the body. Other than that it's one fine beast.

It's a beauty. How much was it? Considering it's 60s, I'd expect quite a bit. Really beautiful though. To quote the Stella Artois commercials, "She,is a thing of beauty"

It was a pretty great find, just under 600, thanks

Lovely! And for that price, wow! Can you play anything on it (probably a terrible question)?

I'm days away from getting a new guitar myself, a Schecter Synyster Custom. Check out this monster.

Schecter makes surprisingly good metal guitars. DEAN and Jackson both sound like shit, despite excellent designs. (Well, okay, DEAN sounds like shit, Jackson doesn't realize that there are three more strings after EAD) but Schecter has impressed me in the past with a very solid range.

Agreed. Too bad more musicians aren't using schecters though.
I've played the syn custom white a few times at the local music store and it sound pretty nice. Very good tones out of it. I think it's factory tuned to drop D, don't quote me on that, though. Not 100% sure. I wish I had enough money for it though ... Oh well. Loving my PRS and Schecter 7-string

It would make a lot of sense if it is factory drop-D tuned. The guitar was designed by schecter according to the specifications given by Avenged Sevenfold lead guitarist, Synyster Gates. Avenged sevenfold songs are more or less all in drop-D.

Peeeople, I know nothing about electric guitars. I can't spend much money either, so basically what I'm asking is for the cheapest guitar (and amp) with "reasonable" sound.
Also don't ask for budget, as I don't exactly know how much I can spend.

If you're looking for a starter kit, look at Ibanez. The squier starters kinda suck ... as in the guitars themselves that are given in the starter suck, and the amps are usually not powerful enough to do anything nice. The other ones I have yet to see, but I know that some companies sell starter kits. I know that First Act also sells really cheap electrics that also suck, however, really it's your choice. My recommendation is to get a nice $500-$800 guitar, something like a Schecter or PRS, and get a small starter amp like a Fender 15W or a marshall 15W or something. it would send you just under $1000 if you find the right stuff. But really, best way to find a guitar is to go to the music store, ask the guys to help you (strap and cable) and try out a few of them on the spot. Make sure you try them on a cheap amp and not the really expensive amps that they have there, as almost any guitar will sound good on an expensive amp. You need to find the combo that works for you. At least, that's how I bought my first guitar, tried it out in store first then at home. If you want to add distortion, you should factor in the price of a pedal (boss pedal or something) as most cheap amps have shitty distortion on them (and sadly ... some expensive ones too ...)
