It literally blew me away when I listened to. Everyone on #music and stuff already knows it leaked, but for everyone else, it has. Half Light I is one of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard, the closing track is gorgeous, and the entire thing is probably the best album I've ever heard, blowing away Funeral and Neon Bible. Anyways, your guys's take?

I haven't listened to it and have no intention of doing so. Therefore, it's awful.

Downloading it now, but from the few tracks I've already heard, it sounds very good.

I actually thought that a lot of the singles and tracks aired on the radio were just middle of the road compared to the rest of the album.

Wow, so they get better? That's a gutsy thing for a band to do, save the best songs for the album.

I've just given this a listen and I don't think it's brilliant. It's good, but don't think it's amazing. It just hasn't had the same impact some albums have on me the first time I listen to it

Tanner, LittleViking001 and SlappyMcGee all agree that the album is mostly filler (and much worse than any of their previous efforts) but that some of the tunes kill live.

I think it's their best, but hey, what do I know.

This statement is correct with and only with the switching of "filler" with "growers"

After the fourth listen to this album, I'm replacing "growers" with "boring".

It takes a lot more than 4 plays to decide if a track (and an album) is good. I've played the album at least a dozen times in the last couple days and just recently the genius of tracks like Deep Blue and Empty room is hitting me, and if you look at any last.fm shout page you'll see that same sentiment echoed over and over again. Just out of curiosity, which tracks?

I think you should be careful about the distinction between liking an album and forcing it into your head because it is what you breathe at night.

Why do you get to be blown away after one listen but I can't be tired of it after four? No, that was rhetorical: It's because you're Arcade Fire's biggest fanboy and would like their album no matter what sort of insincere, self-referential standards they pumped out. The sound of The Suburbs isn't one of a bunch of Canucks bouncing around, playing their instruments in musical ecstasy; it's the sound of a tired seven man indie act grinding out their third album in a room somewhere. Which can work for certain bands. A calmer, more careful focus has produced some of the best work I've ever heard from Liars but it doesn't work for Arcade Fire. The reason that these songs worked so well live at Osheaga was that playing them live eliminated the problems that I have with the album:

1) It's too long and too full of fluff. Playing live, they had to pick and choose which songs they were going to include in the set. They were forced to cut out the fat and it was awesome.

2) Playing live also forces them to go full out, balls to the walls, crazy Regine and scary Win, three violins, two drummers, two keyboardists Arcade Fucking Fire. They're fucking neutered on this album and it sucks.

Also, if you're getting your music reviews from last.fm shouts... why?

I do completely agree with you, in many of the more upbeat tracks of the album, Win's voice is devoid of a lot of the passion of Funeral. I think instead the progression in the band's music is more centered around the gorgeous sound of Half Light I and Sprawl I which to me adds a lot of variety to their repertoire. On a slightly related note, before the album even came out, I always thought it would be awesome for them to make a double album with the entire track listing played live.


As for the last.fm shouts, I'm not basing my opinion about the album on them at the slightest, I was just pointing out there are plenty of people out there like me who realized how great Deep Blue is 20 plays in.
