Favorite Film Composer

My favorite would have to be Thomas Newman. Much of his work is fantastically minimalistic, notably Any Other Name/Dead Already from American Beauty. I am also incredibly impressed with Michael Giacchino for his work on The Incredibles, Star Trek, and more specifically UP ("Married Life" is beautiful). Some other favorites:
Jon Brion - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York
Harry Gregson-Williams - Gone Baby Gone
Hans Zimmer - Batman Begins / The Dark Knight / Pirates of the Caribbean / Madagascar (really only the song "Zoosters Breakout") / SHERLOCK HOLMES (<3 score)
Klaus Badelt - POTC / Premonition
So many more. My music library is a grab bag of film score goodies

Difficult. John Williams and Ennio Morricone spring to mind, but I think I'd have to go with Joe Hisaishi.

Mark Motherbaugh, in particular his work on the Life Aquatic.

Probably not my favourite of all time but I've been really digging on Carter Burwell recently. Particularly his scoring of In Bruges.

My favourite is definitely Michael Giacchino; I fell in love with his scores within the first few episodes of Lost. I'm really glad he won the Oscar, he deserved it.

I like soundtracks but I have a limited knowledge of them. From what I know, I like John Williams and James Newton Howard, and some of Henry Gregson-Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Jerry Goldsmith. POTC is cool (the first one), but it seems like Badelt hasn't done anything big since.
I notice no one is saying James Horner. :P

Seriously? I didn't like that at all.
For me... Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Thomas + Randy Newman, Michael Giacchino, Vangelis, James Newton Howard, John Powell, Joe Hitashi, Yann Tiersen... maaaybe James Horner.

Oh, actually I don't really know why I put that up there. I suppose I just grouped it with The Dark Knight without thinking about it.

Hmm... I don't think he's my favorite, but I agree with Lenny in that Danny Elfman is really very good.
I'm in the same boat as Avarin, though. I have a somewhat limited knowledge of soundtracks.
I've said this a couple times around here, but the Oceans Twelve soundtrack is very good, especially David Holmes' pieces.

I love Howard Shore's work on LotR.

Mega thread revival!
I can't tell you how much I'm loving David Julyan and Clint Mansell right now. Specifically scores for The Prestige, Memento, Moon, and The Fountain. I'm also quite enjoying David Schwartz's contributions to Arrested Development.
EDIT: Oh, and I can't forget Gustavo Santaolalla! Babel had some amazing music
EDIT AGAIN: Damn, I left out Alexandre Desplat for The King's Speech!

Wow, reading this thread made me realise how many class composers I'd forgotten.
A selection of my favourites would be Hans Zimmer/Klaus Badelt for POTC, Jerry Goldsmith for ST: Voyager, John Williams for... quite a lot, and Danny Elfman's done some pretty good stuff aswell. I'll probably have a complete revision and think of a load more, but those are the first that spring to mind.
In terms of game soundtracks (not films, but hey), I thought Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori's compositions for Halo 2 were fantastic. Honestly never heard better music for a game.

I'm no movie expert, so my scope of knowledge is limited. But based on what I do know, I'll go with Hans Zimmer.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

The Prestige's soundtrack was incredible. Gonna go watch that shit again.

I have a soft spot for Alexandre Desplat.
