"Jump," by Van Halen, starts exuberantly, so I listen to it time and again, though I dislike that band in general, and don't really like the rest of the song. Point being, the beginning can make a song, the beginning can break a song.

Share faves, pref. with link.

I'll update my own later.

The Mars Volta's Son et Lumiere + Inertiatic ESP
The Arcade Fire's Wake Up
Do Make Say Think's The Universe! (no good link)
OK Go's A Million Ways
Eagles of Death Metal's Miss Alissa
Every song on Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf (Give track 9, Go with the Flow, a shot)

Probably a bunch of Tool. Probably a bunch of Nine Inch Nails. I haven't listened to much of them lately, so I won't try to give a recommendation.

Tower Above the Earth - Night Phlox
Cigaro - System of a Down (although, many System songs fit the bill...this choice was arbitrary).

Not an immediate bang, but I'd say Kissing the Lipless by The Shins.

I figure we're not talking too literally, right? Pure Reason Revolution's Voices in Winter / The Realms of Divine has one of the most wonderful openings I know.

FRED's "Damn You Hollywood" starts out fairly subdued but turns...interesting about 25 seconds in. The video on YouTube cuts out the best parts, but the full version can be found on their MySpace here.

I missed a chance to see Explosions in the Sky free, outdoors, with (naturally) fireworks. Was that the huge mistake I'm beginning to think it was?

First song, AMAZING, especially the beginning.
Second song, two-for-two. And wasn't it in Where the Wild Things Are or something?
The OK Go song did start with a bang, but the music video is off-putting.
EoDM was alright, fast-paced and everything, and the video was very cool.
Last song: not that great imo, but the video... surprised.

As for the rest: liked the Night Phlox intro, but nothing else about it. The System of a Down song started loud. Yanni, the PRR song was my overall favorite. (Oh, and, literally would be cool too.) heatwave, that was a super cool song. Mute Monk, the FRED song was enervating, congrats.

Basically, you all rock with the great response; I enjoyed branching out a bit, thanks.

I love you for loving 'Jump' flagmyidol. Although I don't think the beginning is particularly the best part of the song nor the best beginning from the group. The whole song is really maintained at a very high level.

'Circles' by Joe Satriani is built up well for the first minute until things really kick off.

Wellllllll. "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Eruption" are their best, in my opinion. But "Jump"'s beginning is just good structure. Love it.

Good Girl/Carrots by Panda Bear. It scares me nearly every time, especially considering what precedes it on the album.
