i know that portishead is trip hop, its just that one song had elements of prog rock. I can't be bothered defining prog rock, all i was saying was that one single song sounded a bit prog rocky.

{sigh} I don't really want to explain it, as analysing a joke is like disecting a frog: nobody laughs, and the frog dies.

but i'll do it anyway...

Basically i was joking, because the artists "daft punk" and "aphex twin" are toatally different, as you explained earlier, daft punk are house, wheras aphex twin is Electronic/IDM/Drill n' Bass. The joke was that i put forth the idea that these two bands had a similar sound, whereas, in fact, they obviously do not.

There, are you laughing now? i thought not.

Haha, I want to know what you would call elements of prog rock? It seems like an open-ended statement meant to impress your betters. But that's just how it comes across.

Aphex_n:

We briefly mentioned this on the IRC and I thought about it a little more. In this community we have an incredibly large, and an incredibly far-reaching background and knowledge of music. Collectively, we cover almost every genre that exists (or almost, certainly). Frankly, I find this amazing for a community founded around a little monochrome game with a ninja.

Me personally, I can happily go from listening to the most extreme doom metal to post-rock, and then to underground hip-hop, and then to chamber jazz. Now, being 31 years old certainly helps - it gives you a lot more time to be exposed to these other forms of music.

But back to the main point. We find it a little condescending when you recommend us such well-known artists as Aphex Twin and Portishead, even if we don't like them because we recognise the impact they have had on their respective genres. KA is the most knowledgeable of prog rock around these parts - to say to him that a band like Portishead have prog-rock elements is a little redundant, to say the least.

Anyway, that's my point. Get on IRC, come to #music and we'll gladly talk with you.

Orange- N cannot be spoken, or even thought about in my household. If my parents ever found out that I have played N since the cleansing, my life would be ruined. I keep the game in a multi-passworded .rar on a USB flash drive inside a locked boron alloy container that requires two keys to open (I keep one under the 64th hammer in my piano, and the other one in a small section of removable ceiling in the corner of the attic) hidden in a wall compartment lined with aluminium foil to prevent sonar detection behind my 375 kg cupboard, which is bolted to the floor - the only way to reach it is to abseil outside the fourth floor window and use a screwdriver to unfasten the screws holding the secret brick in place on the opposite side of the wall, but the screwdriver must be a specific type like the one I own, since if any other screwdriver comes into contact with the screws, the entire building will explode, as will a seperate charge placed inside the boron alloy container, rendering the USB useless. Even once the container is retrieved, attemping to open it without the arming pin in place (which is kept inside the battery compartment of my Maglite) will cause the water reservoirs lining the container to burst and react with the caesium lining, causing the container to burst into flames - the only way to prevent this is to use the arming pins to shut off the reservoirs with a sliding steel door. The USB itself contains an accelerometer linked to an explosive charge, meaning that if the USB detects its own movement speed as being greater than 5 cm/s, it will explode - any person attempting to steal it would have to move at a uselessly slow speed. Once plugged into a computer, the USB will upload a ghost virus onto it, leaving no traces. Only the right password can deactivate this virus, and if it is left on the computer for more than six hours, it will format all drives.

As you can see, I take my N playing very seriously.

I mentioned this in another post, but 'the Sound of Animals Fighting' is a pretty tight band. There first album was very electronic experimental. Then they did a hardcore progressive skit (The Tiger and the Duke). They finally came out with a progressive rock album (The Ocean and the Sun), but each song sounds sooo different, their pretty good.

In youtube type in 'Uzbekistan Animals' for something more electronic, and 'Heraldic Beak' for a more complicated rock song... and turn the volume up!
I execute position 12 of the Kama Sutra... Passion fills the room.

the movies are:
electroma
interstellar 5555
and another one, i forgot the name...

electroma is ok, its art house, and i didn't really like it

interstellar 5555 is amazing, its basically a full length animated feature set to daft punks "discovery" album.

the other ones ok, as you can guess, its not very memorable ^^

Trance is not a subgenre of Electronica. Electronic, Electronica, Techno, D&B, and Trance are all different genres as far as I'm concerned. Everything else related is a subgenre of one of those main five.

Electronica is a wanky term with varying definitions, but 'electronic' at the very least has got to be a parent genre of techno, trance, etc.

Well, by the previous posts, this has turned into a place to post their favourite dance music, no matter what sub genre its from.

I've got quite into "Ratatat" recently, as well as some chilling "blu mar ten".

Erm, going roughly by what is labelled in my library as electronic or similar (lo-fi, trip-hop, downtempo) :
Air, Amon Tobin, Boards of Canada, The Cinematic Orchestra, DJ Shadow, Empire of the sun, Fatboy Slim, Lemon Jelly, Nightmares On wax, Prefuse 73, The Prodigy, Royksopp, Sneaker Pimps, UNKLE, 65daysofstatic, Bonobo, Crystal castles, Massive Attack, Mr. Scruff, Coldcut, RJD2, Blockhead, DJ Krusch, Fila Brazillia.

Hmm, maybe not strictly 'electronic' but similar enough to still be relevant.
