Is anybody here on Twitter? I was thinking it might be a neat idea to tweet about the maps we're making/playing/etc that could use a little extra attention. I don't play maps on NUMA all that much, but I feel like it would help recent maps get more attention after falling off the Hot Maps page, as a tweet will outlast the original map posting and also reach a targeted audience that might have otherwise missed it. It might also make it easier to keep track of Dronie hopefuls (if the Dronies are still a thing) and whatnot. Just a thought, trying to keep NUMA on its feet. #discuss

Another thought: If someone did a weekly rundown of the Nmaps Twittersphere, it'd make a quick and easy substitute for the Sunday N. #justaddwater

Somehow I doubt that. Regardless, I used to read some of the Metanetter's tumblrs, and I don't think they suit my proposed purpose. Basically I'm envisioning a collaborative news ticker for NUMA -- something that's short, sweet, and helps maps and mapmakers get the attention they deserve. If you make a list on Twitter and follow it, that's basically what you get. For example:

The map will be off the front page in a few hours, maybe a day for someone like Losttortuga, but the community's Twitter feed will move a little slower as we separate the wheat from the chaff. Thus, you might find and play a new map a few days after it was posted, when otherwise you would have missed it.

And distilling this distillation into a weekly recap a la the Sunday N would be pretty simple. I might even offer to do it myself, at least for a little while. If nothing else, it's also one more way the community can keep up the chatter. Goodness knows IRC's not what it used to be. Then again, maybe that's a sign that there aren't enough birds for a decent flock.

Solid idea, I think. An administrator type should publicise the hashtag with a NUMA news post.

My brand-spanking-new account is @ninjarobotfeidi. ChrisE and 29403, I'm following both of you and added you to a list called nmapsdotnet. This shows all of your tweets, though, which I guess necessitates a hashtag to whittle it down to NUMA-related tweets. Any objections to #nmapsdotnet? You could also make separate accounts for Metanet-related stuff, like I have, which would allow the list to function just as well as the hashtag. I'm new to this, though, so we'll take whatever course of action you guys think works best.

Separate accounts are fine but I'd say unnecessary--the hashtag should be all we need. And I think just #nmaps on its own would do--no-one's using it.

Let me know when y'all finalize something. Maybe our dwindling NUMA-only userbase has some twitter.

So the gist is that anytime you make a map you should tweet it with #nmaps attached? I know more or less nothing about twitter so maybe someone else should write a blurb for the home page.

No, any time you /play/ a map, and find that you like it enough to tell other people about it. The same way you'd tell your friends about some really great restaurant you went to that nobody seems to know about. It's more about promoting others than yourself. If you want, I could sit down and write the blurb this evening.

Does twitter provide hashtag-based widgets? Like, a widget giving you an updated stream of tweets with a certain hashtag (#nmaps) that you could keep on the side of NUMA somewhere. Although those typically don't look too great I think.

Not that I know of. You might be able to provide a link to a search for the hashtag, though.

If our little experiment succeeds, the NUMA community will have an easy way to sift through the sands of the archive and find those precious nuggets of gold. With all the best maps of the moment in one place, preparing the Sunday N would be orders of magnitude easier. And when Dronie season rolls around, the best maps of the year will be a hashtag away.

Definitely not. For a start, anyone can join, and it is just a place to point out cool maps you've played. They don't even have to be the best maps, just something neat that maybe other people might have missed. The whole point is to get process of sharing maps more fluid.

It's not a part of NUMA, it's not limited to a select group of people, it's not limited to highlighting just 'the best' maps, it can include discussion, comments, etc... it's nothing like Bitesize. This is just people talking about and sharing stuff on Twitter.

Had to use this thing to find Pheidi and Chris cos only two results came up for #nmaps.
Perhaps a regional thing? Or maybe I'm just twitter stupid...
