I think we can stop re-submitting after getting lower then a 4 or when we didn't get enough rates. Even if it was from a snipe or somone thinking way too critically about our map.
I think we can stop commenting on peoples maps, when they forgot or decided not to rate our map, and then giving a half baked comment about that map.
I think we can stop getting mad at people when they rate lower then what we wanted and accept their criticism and improve.
I think we can stop saying that someone sniped us, when it was someones actually opinion, then requesting "antisnipes" from our peeps.
I think we can start thinking about are rates carefully and giving a fair number and then commenting about what that person needs to improve on.
I think we can all agree on this. Yes?

anti-snipes are just as bad as snipes.
this community is too damn smart to let idiocy get the better of us so lets be honest when rating and try to think things through.

Ratings disabled is completely useless. It seems to me to be more of a statement, a "Haha I'm cool and wise because I don't care about ratings" thing rather than a "People won't understand how to rate this" thing.atob wrote:Transcendence is achieved via the ratings disabled button.
Disabling ratings does nothing but reduce the amount of attention your maps receive.

If your maps are good enough they'll receive attention regardless of how well they float.

Also atob doesnt need to have ratings. He is popular enough that people will look 'em up to play his maps. Also comments > ratings. Which you seem to get more of if you disable ratings.

That, right there, is a steaming pile of epigone FTW.epigone wrote:How about if everyone just does whatever they want, be it disable ratings, or not, and we all just shut up about it and get on with life. Enough is enough. Spudz, by making this topic you are only continuing dialogue on the subject. Just stop talking about ratings if they don't matter to you, and if they do matter to you, make better maps.
I'm saving that one.

The fact of the matter is, the old threads that are about THIS SAME EXACT THING have people that have posted in them with your exact same ideas and thoughts on the subject, just with different usernames and a different kind of respect within the community.SkyPanda wrote:Oldies are sick to death of this, but that's no reason the new folk can't discuss it. :/
But I have an idea:
Let's be silent about the issue and accept our NUMA ratings. I've been sniped before, do you know what I did about it? I laughed with people on IRC. Yeah, figure that concept out. I didn't ask for "anti-snipes" or for people to feel sorry for me. I LAUGHED ABOUT IT.

I agree with RF on this one, at least in his intended context. Its not as if disabling ratings is gonna increase the amount of attention a map gets in any stretch of the imagination. And whilst its alright for popular oldies like gloomp, yahoozy, evil bob, amlt, some people dont get attention that quickly.Radium wrote:Ratings disabled is completely useless. Moving on, I agree with everything spudz has said, considering Ive done most of it at some point and regretted it, and want to repent.

Excuse me? When did I bring my personal ideas and thoughts to the table? I didn't, dude.manus australis wrote:The fact of the matter is, the old threads that are about THIS SAME EXACT THING have people that have posted in them with your exact same ideas and thoughts on the subject, just with different usernames and a different kind of respect within the community.
I know that the old hreads are all the same, hence me posting "we're sick of this".
I just think that it's still good for new folk to talk about it, because it means that everybody in the community gets the chance at some point to participate in discussion on the subject if they wish.

Spudz, your first post isn't bad. Amen to it. Hopefully some members will learn from it.
The reason why epigone posted what he did is that generally people will do whatever they are going to do, and threads like this generate a lot of fruitless back-and-forth. Generally, if people are going to think about their ratings, then they are going to do it on their own, and, if not, they aren't, even with encouragement. Not to mention that a lot of noobs who make these errors on NUMA don't come to the forums. Plus, with atob's disabled ratings vs those that disagree with him, both sides are entrenched and are likely to remain entrenched. In any case, there are a lot of people in the general middle ground, and if this convinces 1 or 2 members to try to vote better, then I'd say it does more good than harm.

And if you say "That's because you're Dave!", it's important to note that I didn't become Dave by getting good ratings.

Skypanda: The reason we don't any more threads like these is that people are basically repeating the content over and over again. We've already established (long ago) that ratings are an inaccurate way of assessing map quality. Subsequent threads which discuss this are essentially duplicates with new user names.

Hey George, oh we definately don't need the threads, but I think the reason we should let threads like these scooter along is because they:George wrote:Skypanda: The reason we don't any more threads like these is that people are basically repeating the content over and over again. -open up the issues to modern thought
-allow oldies to lecture and teach the newbies
-let the new generations participate, and come to their own conclusions
But you're alot more experienced here than me so you're probably being practical while i'm being idealistic. :p

Thats like saying typing at this computer is keeping away tigers; since Im typing and theres no tigers around. Theres no correlation imo.spudzalot wrote:Also comments > ratings. Which you seem to get more of if you disable ratings.
Perhaps its the fact that people who disable ratings have status OR are new (and people know that if a noob disables ratings, theyre smart enough to take criticism on board) and the character of the person disabling ratings generally leads to more attention?

I'm not going to lock these threads, pointless as I think they are, if you guys can stay on topic and make relevant posts. But really, what the heck does this quoted text have anything to do with people complaining about ratings? You're making a dumb discussion dumber.Rikaninja wrote:Tigers, wow. Who ever knew they loved comps so much? That's an interesting fact that I'm going to remember:BEG:
Anyway, Avarin is essentially right about why I posted what I did before. This is a never-ending argument, both sides are entrenched as he put it. The sooner we all accept that ratings are superfluous, the happier we'll all be.
Make maps because it's fun to make them, not because you want to be super popular and famous online. If you don't simply enjoy making maps what's the point of making them anyway? Chances are if you enjoy making maps, and you enjoy playing the maps you make, other people will start to notice that you're making fun maps. Then, a few drink later, you'll be Dave too.
