okay, so like i said rough idea, but what if (along with my replying to comments idea) there is a kinda of 'tick if this comment helpful' thing, (yes youtube inspired). but here's where it gets original, people who have the most ticks for the past 7 days have their top recent maps (like the hot authors page) shown on a separate page, like a reward for being so helpful

i dunno. probably too hard to include, but just throwing it out there.

A definite no from me.

-authors are being favoured for something not relevant to the quality of the maps that they have made. Yes, I realise that constructive criticism is a key part of NUMA's function, but still.

-very easily misused ("hey, that guy made a funny random comment, lets give him ticks")

-very easily cheated ("hey guys, i'm popular, give me ticks")

-are people going to actually look at maps from an author simply because that author gives good comments? I'm not sure, but its something to consider.

Eh, I'm not too sure how this will work, like SkyPanda has said, there are flaws.
Iunno, this might be more helpful for maybe potential map reviewers?
It can also be abused if someone just continuously posts comments that are complete nonsense, and just get newer members to click them : "Hey, I'm looking for someone to help me, all you gotta do is click my comments and say it was helpful, and I'll give you a ded!!"
So yeah. 40/60 on the idea.

yeah, like i said, it's rough, but.. mmm. i guess it probably wouldn't work, i just think there needs to be something pushing people to make helpful comments. oh! i got a new one. A vote is made at the end of each month on who has been the most helpful member of the NUMA community, the person who gets the most votes gets the same thing (most recent maps) on the home page for the next month, until the next person gets voted, if it's a draw the winners each get their maps shown so they get an equal amount. eg.: 3 people draw. (it's november so there are 30 days) so they each get 10 days with their maps shown.

i dunno. like i said there needs to be something pushing for helpful comments

It's coming along I guess.
On second thought, I think this would be better if it was implemented on the forums..
Like have someone, monitor NUMA, and picks people. And they could also have people post on the forums who they want to /nominate/ for the position? Then they just get the feature on the first post, and nothing interferes with NUMA itself.

I reckon more helpful comments on NUMA would be fantastic, but remember there's already alot of intangible benefits for providing quality comments.
Like,
-numagoers who consistently give quality comments are often remembered for that, and build a reputation as a helpful commenter
-whe a person gives a quality comment, its not unusual for the author of the map to return the favour by commenting some of their maps

Personally I prefer those kind of intangible benefits over complex reward systems, but anything that gives people an incentive to provide better quality comments, without too much interferance or annoyance, is awesome.

Also, this would be so easily ruined by multiaccounters.

The thought behind this isn't bad though. I think we do need some other system for promoting authors/maps other than hotmaps (which moves to quickly) and featured maps (which moves to slowly).

There is a very simple solution for MAs. One vote per IP, simple.

Comment ratings would get exposed to the same things that map ratings already do, which really doesn't matter too much. I like this idea in theory, but ultimately it all comes down to whether or not people can actually become more motivated to sincerely "act more helpful" when presented with a solid reward; I feel a little bit cynical that this assumption might have any truth to it.

Useful and recoursefull idea. It would definetely help more people get their maps attended. Good work.

i like "active critics" better, but where the active critics page goes by the number of characters posted. sure, that can be got around by spamming, but there is a report comment button for a reason. as skypanda said, there are already rewards for it, but anything to get proper quality commenting happening..
