In other words, what would you say are the guidelines that make a map a 2 or a 4, crucial elements that a map needs to have, This is just for curiosity, Im not trying to harbour tips from you guys :P Just wondered what elements you feel need to be there for you to give it a 5 or w/e.

A rating is really just a classification of quality. There are both objective and subjective aspects to a map, and I'm sure I don't need explain them. The rating 'guidelines' on NUMA also give a good indication on the way to go rating a map. If you feel that the map is a 'above average', rate it around a 3, and so on.

I go with a gut decision. Or, I used to. I don;t rate anymore.

It's not a five unless it's got insanely awesome replayability, basically. I want a map that can last me a solid hour before I give it a five. Beyond that, it's a blend of aesthetics and gameplay, just like everyone else.

Well ratings are not that useful unless there is a comment on why that map is rated like that.
Like the amount of maps with the average rating of 4, is unbelievably high, with such a wide range of quality between them.
But if you put some thought into your comment, and some critique, then that would be what the definition of the rating is.

well i think that the rating system is messed up considering maps cant be "average" just above or below

gameplay is really all i base my disision on, like if i have fun its a 4 if its spammed its a 1-2 but if im like WOW this is really fun they must have spent alot of time on this then i will prob ive it a 5 (witch odly enuf happens to me alot when i play your maps)

i honestly dont think people 5 something enough. people should rate completely honestly, if its a crappy map 0 or 1 it. if it shows some kind of promise that the author has a brain 1-2, if its joe average 2-3, good maps are 3-4 and maps that make you want need to complete them, then agd them, then agd them faster are 4-5. thats how i do it. be noone really gives 0, 1, 2, or 5 ratings much. which is sad.

I've decided to not rate 5 anymore, because no map will ever be perfect.

As for the definition of a rating, a rating is a number on a scale where one side is leaning toward lesser quality and the other toward higher quality. With NUMA, the lesser value is 0, and the higher value is 5. Numbers closer to 0 show little quality, while numbers close to 5 show good quality.

helps keep your map on the hot maps page for longer actually.
who cares what it should mean. basically, it hints at weather you're a good mapper or not.

@pikman: pff, 5 goes to map of the day really. sometimes there can be two 5s in a day, sometimes theres never more than a 3 around.

well a 0 is a map that isnt any good, a 1 is a map that i couldnt be bothered to finsih, a 2 is a map that was painful to finish, and a 3 is a normal map
a 4 is something exciting, and a 5 is just incredible

I think a rating doesnt do much.

A rating doesnt decide how good a mapper is just how good the map is, so really why do we care about them. Its only a number.

I only really rate when i have to, like the map rating group or the map rating/commenting threads. Exept when i see a great map that i very much enjoy or i see a very boring uselsess map i tend to rate them

So many people half rate my maps and noone elses! Anyway, this is "my" criteria:
0: The ninja and door ar missing and there is no gameplay
1: Completable but wasn't fun or aesthetically pleasing
2: Completeable and fun but missing the cleverness and doesn't look good
3: An average map which was fairly fun to play
4: A map where you can see the author ha put in effort and has come out whith a fun pleasing result
5: A brilliant map whith almost no room for errors

Yups, that's about it,
