Suggestion: map bumping?

You've all probably at one point submitted a map at a bad time of day or something and watched sink off the hot maps page like a rock. So, if a map is unrated and you feel it needs more attention, how about having it bump back up to the top of the list? Of course, to avoid abuse you would be able to do it only once every, say, two weeks, and only on maps submitted in the last 72 hours, and maybe a few more restrictions I haven't thought of.
Thoughts?

Also, let's say that ten people (just in one hour) bumped their maps to top.. Suppose that I bumped my map to top too. It would appear on second page, even though it's bumped. To implement that, a page should consist of twenty or fifty maps, though the suggestion you've made include lotsa' holes in it. (I just stated three of them)

Then it would simply be like re-subbing the map, but you'd be able to keep any comments/rates the map already has.
This could be implemented in tandem with the old queue system (2 maps at a time).

The fact of the matter is:29403 wrote:Map-Rating Thread... we're too impatient!
The more people that use the Map-Rating Thread more frequently the less time you'll have to wait.
As Pheidippides said, we already have threads in place for this sort of thing and it would be silly to implement some brand new system if we don't have to. If you're so worried about how many ratings//comments your maps get, spend a few minutes playing a map in the Map-Rating/Commenting threads and get more people to do so more frequently.

The Unrated Maps page could list maps that haven't received x ratings in x days. For example: If a map is submitted and it goes for 24 hours without a single rating, it could get added to this page. When it gets rated, it gets removed from the page. If the map doesn't have two ratings after 72 hours, say, it would be re-added to the page. This cycle would continue until the map has 5 votes or has been on the page for a month or so.
The Maps that need more attention page would work in a similar way but with comments, and maybe some user control. If the map has less than 3 comments from different authors, a user who likes the map can bump the map onto this page if they feel it deserves some extra attention.
I think what would be even better is to prevent people from submitting maps until they've rated and commented at least 5 times on different maps by different authors. Granted this could be abused, but that's where rating stats would come into it, showing who rated what, etc... The person could be flagged on a moderation log if they rate/comment a map within 30 seconds of loading the page.

Your idea of map bumping wouldn't really achieve much in my view.
Lets say 100 maps are submitted by different users in the first two week period... Some of these maps get attention and most go ignored (which is basically how NUMA currently runs). Each author after the two week period decides their map hasn't received as much attention as was desired, so they bump their map. There are now 200 maps posted up, and the same cycle repeats; however, now the few users who play most submitted maps will be annoyed at having to sift through maps they've recently seen to get to the newer ones.

In a perfect world, this might work, but with newbies as numerous as they are, this page would be flooded with maps of such obviously low quality that people ignore them entirely.amomentlikethis wrote:Wouldn't a better system be to have a page of Unrated Maps and Maps that need more attention?

Seems like an oddly specific version of Featured Maps, which we already have. There's a reason only certain people have Featuring privileges, and it's the same reason only certain people had Bitesize privileges back in the day. And again, newbies could easily throw a monkey wrench in this by bumping bad maps.amomentlikethis wrote:The Maps that need more attention page would work in a similar way but with comments, and maybe some user control. Like you said, this is easily abused, and implementing the necessary (but arbitrary) countermeasures would probably be more difficult than the feature would be worth. Besides, NUMA's always operated by assuming the best of its users. A newbie is supposed to be able to jump right in and share what they've got to share, because sometimes they've got something very much worth sharing. Having to pay a toll of comments in order to use the site doesn't seem to fit that idea. You're judging users before they've even done anything.amomentlikethis wrote:I think what would be even better is to prevent people from submitting maps until they've rated and commented at least 5 times on different maps by different authors. Pretty much, yeah. Hence, the Map Rating Thread. If everyone with ignored maps congregated there like they used to, there'd be no one calling for new code to be implemented (which won't be implemented any time soon, as we all know nobody's stepped up to grab the baton from Arachnid). Back in 2007 or so, I used the Map Rating Thread a lot, and certainly got the attention I was looking for. It's a good system, and it's one that's already been implemented here for years with great success. People just need to take advantage of it instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.amomentlikethis wrote:Your idea of map bumping wouldn't really achieve much in my view.

Your comment idea is pretty dope though. I think it would be cool to have a link somewhat like the "View unanswered posts" link on the forums but for NUMA. Anything with less than 5 comments by unique authors could be eligible, I think.
Anything that requires users to comment/rate before submitting a map is a bad idea and will eventually lead to people leaving the website out of frustration, I'm afraid.

Maybe base the amount of ratings/comments on the amount of maps the user has then. 1 map = rate and comment at least one map; 5 maps = rate and comment at least two maps; 20 maps = rate and comment at least 3 maps; ... 500 maps = rate and comment at least 10 maps; etc...Pheidippides wrote:Like you said, this is easily abused, and implementing the necessary (but arbitrary) countermeasures would probably be more difficult than the feature would be worth. I think this would be pretty fair considering there are a lot of mapmakers on NUMA who expect to receive feedback on their maps yet never seem to leave feedback on others'.
