Another thing thing I've been meaning to mention for a while: how does the map type field work? If it lets you choose from a few sample types, how specific will you get there? Because I think there should definitely be things like "mine jumper" that don't fall into the straight action/puzzle/etc mold. Furthermore, will people only be able to put in one type? It's not uncommon to see things like action puzzles. Will AltArc be able to accommodate that kind of stuff?

At the moment, AltArc's type behavior is that of the old NUMA- a dropdown menu. I can change it to accommodate multiple types, though.

Updates for 3 March: There used to be a file, 'voters.txt', that was a list of people who voted and what they voted. It's now a part of the map database with all the other metadata. Needless to say, the voting process is a lot more efficient than it used to be.

My apologies for the double post, but I've made a few updates.
  • Users are now able to save maps- meaning the maps are added to a user-specific list, much like favoriting, except saving a map doesn't boost its popularity or score in any way. It simply holds the map for later.
  • incluye's theme is still coming along. I've done quite a bit of work on the map pages, particularly with the voting and commenting sections.
  • I took LV's advice and implemented mod_rewrite into AltArc. Maps are now /123 instead of /map/123, and users are now /~bob instead of /user/bob, kind of like some university websites.
  • Users can now submit a map under multiple types.
  • I'm sure I've made more updates, but I can't remember them all right now.
Also, there might be a beta preview later today, at altarc-dev.sector-five.net:8000. I'm not making any promises yet, though.

3 more ideas

1) A way to post map data in the comments. Quite often when I'm trying to help new players I'll edit their map to show them what I mean or how it could be better ( for example today http://nmaps.net/160263 ). Is there any way there could be a box like the map feature on this forum to make it easier, neater and easy to select ?

2) Something which shows inactive if a user hasn't posted a map in 6 mounths or a year. Sometimes I use random map and I want to post a comment and I have to go and find their most recent map to see if they even still exist

3) Favorite authors section/list. Loads of people have these on their profiles but it would be cool if it was easier to add people and it automatically linked them and it came up in a table or something.

sorry if these ideas have been mentioned before

Ideas 1 and 2 sound nice. I'm not sure if I entirely understand the third, though.

Also, here is my current to-do list. [DONE] means I completed it but haven't announced it yet, [WIP] means 'work in progress', and [ONGOING] means it can't really ever be completed, but it'll be worked upon as time goes by.

[DONE] 'Save' maps - 15 minutes
[DONE] Generalized sorting (playable, non-, special, meta) - 45 minutes
[DONE] Remove the need for individual directories like /map/# and /user/Bob using .htaccess and mod_rewrite - 2 hours
[DONE] Ability to select themes - 30 minutes
[DONE] Fixed a bug where queries wouldn't automatically sort themselves if it didn't begin with an &
[DONE] Some technical fixes on the map browsing page; it should be more efficient now
[DONE] "Favorite" banner has been resized so it covers less of the description area and looks cleaner
[WIP] Stop brute-force login attempts - 30+ minutes
Alert system - 1+ hour
Recently viewed maps - 15 minutes
Recent comments - 45+ minutes
Mappacks - 1 hour
Customized browsing presets - 30 minutes
Batch-download - 30 minutes
Make voting more visual / image-based - 30+ minutes
Sort users by maps, comments sent/received, etc. - 1+ hour
Ability to append to comments - 30+ minutes
Batch-submit to AltArc and NUMA - 1+ hour
[ONGOING] User preferences - 2+ hours
[ONGOING] Finish incluye's theme - 1.5+ hours

Regarding my theme: I finished the HTML/CSS for the maps page yesterday and am working on the news page, etc. I didn't think the example you showed me was accurate to my intended setup, so I started it myself.
Now I'm a state away from my computer and can't get to it right now but I'll PM you back as soon as I can.

Of course, reading back through this thread after a hiatus of a sort, it looks like I may have screwed up skin development anyway...JUST GET ON IRC

What was wrong with the example I showed you? I've been adhering to your example as strictly as possible.

I know, I know. There are a few changes I wanted to make, though. My theme has a different minimum width and the banner behaves differently. JUST GET ON IRC :(

Here is a more dynamic preview of the theme. The rating box is going to be changed in the future; I can't say exactly how, but it's not sticking around for long.

You shouldn't be able to. It's just a static mirror; no registrations, submissions, or anything else is available. It's basically an HTML screenshot.

Looks nice; I'll begin merging it with the current version ASAP.

Also, the most basic piece of security is finally incorporated into AltArc: after 3 failed login attempts, the user (or hacker) will need to enter a CAPTCHA for each subsequent attempt.

Current map page.
It's a little iffy. I think the title name color needs to be changed.

Maybe if you just made it the same as the browsing page, it would look better? Or were you going for some differentiation between the two?

A system where quality maps can be flagged as quality maps. Just like bitesizing. I don't see what the problem was with it.

Same as the browsing page...?

Meh. You're right. It does look pretty stupid right now. Just overhaul it however you want, I thought differentiation would be nice.

The only problem I saw with bitesizing was that if you bitesized a map that was submitted two months ago, no one would know about it. I like how the featured map system shows everyone each map that gets featured, and I think that should be carried on in any new system.

@incluye: I've finished merging the new stylesheet with the old HTML (I liked my old IDs and classes ;_;), and I've begun to work on the maps page. Do you care if the user boxes are fairly similar to the map boxes (as in, the ones on the browsing page)? I don't mean comments, btw, I mean the users page.

@others: I think that if any sort of featuring system will be implemented, it will be after the main release at this point.
...And on that topic, you can expect a public beta sometime this week. It'll be on the 110mb host, rather than my own computer, so everything should go a bit faster.

Question: the comment type implemented into AltArc allows you to reply to comments that aren't the most recent? That's spectacular. I want.

Actually, that was just a feature incluye used in his theme design, but I have considered implementing nested comments (ability to reply to others).

Threaded commenting would be excellent.
And a beta will be cool...though you should consider the kind of publicity you want, if you know what I'm saying?
People write to me and say, "I’m giving up, you’re not talking to me." I just write them a simple message like, "Never give up," you know? And it changes their life

That's fine. Also, I think all the general content, maps, users, individual maps, etc. should be 900px wide max. N maps are not a wide thing...I realized this some time ago.
