what is the difference between a mappack and a series?

A series is usually a set of maps that are released one (or a couple) at a time. You can take tktktk's Simple Challenge Series as a good example. A map pack is usually a larger volume of maps released all at once.

Also, series usually have an obvious theme in common, like either all races, or all have the same objects etc etc.
Versus a mappack's random maps. Mappacks can have themes, when the point of the pack is for themes though.
