Old thread recreated from the old forums. Instead of submitting it in a text, you can use the new and handy "map" tag now.
Sweep wrote:Format of evaluating a map (optional):

You can evaluate anyone's map (that needs evaluating of course)when you please, but to have your map evaluated, you must evaluate a map yourself. I'll add that to the main post too.

(I will evaluate the next two maps posted on here as well)

Okay, so I have a map that I'm not sure if I should submit it to NUMA. It's called "Mr. Nutter", and it's a mine jumper. It's probably an old concept, and there may be a map very veyr similar to it, but I need serious advice.

Please, critique needed.

Well, here's the thing. Before I go into critique, let me just say that I make episodic maps, and nothing more. If this were one of my maps, it would have four mines in it - No more, no less. Since it's a NUMA map, I'd say you could get away with maybe thirteen or fourteen mines to still make it challenging and fun. Here's my twelve-mine version, and keep in mind that this is an extreme, but it's done to illustrate a point. Really, though - Even if you wanted it to be a mine jumper, you can half the mines and have the same exact effect in the end.

You've diluted the challenge far too much there, Teh Blizz. I agree it could use a little toning down, but you've left out the challenging jumps entirely.

I can't even make it past that first jump, Riobe. You got a demo to go with it?

Yes, one is coming up soon enough.

EDIT: Here's a death demo, but you see how to complete a few of the jumps. I now realize after looking at Kablizzy's edit that I could have tuned it down a lot more. Thank you.

This is going to be hard to explain, but right after the final patch of gold, the mine on the diagonal 'roof' is really really really awkward and tricky compared to the rest of the map. Other than that its pretty coo', submit!

edts: actually having said that, i managed to fluke that jump a few times :p still might be a bit of a turn-off to have a fiddly jump right at the very end.

I see, I think I went a bit overboard on that part. I tuned it down quite a bit, and some parts are still pretty tough, but it's kinda easier now. Thanks for all the help guys. ^^

Tone down that first jump too, imo, and I reckon it's ready.

Awww, I wish I had seen this earlier. I would have given my 2 cents on your map, Riobe, but I'll just give it on NUMA now. Good idea to recreate this thread, btw.

Way too many mines and I think that keeping it tricky is good but I like all maps with sometype of flow ar goininy about it. Th first jump takes to long, cut down on the mines and it is defintely a type of map I have never seen. But then again I haven't seen much.

Just like BT thinks the "sky"s are all the same, I can't tell the difference between all the people with panda refrences... besides panda origami alligator. Well, I'll have to check some of your maps, then

Rikaninja, I'm already finished with the other map, and it's already been submitted to NUMA. =P

This is a kind of odd minejumper thing. It requires perpendicular jumps, and has two different sides to it. One side is an easy side with less reward. The next is the hard side with more reward, and an optional take on the easy side as well. Help please.

So how does this work, can anybody get critique on maps here, or is it just for your maps, and if anybody, then is it one at a time, or everyone just put up their maps whenever.

Yes, it is for everybody, incase you were confused. You can evaluate anyone's map, but to have your map evaluated, you must evaluate a map yourself. I'll add that to the main post too.

Also, I'll evaluate the next two I see on here, if any come that is.

The left side is much better now, though still on the difficult side. The right side seems more or less the same, which is fine because that side was good (IMO). I'd say its ready to submit.

Ok, then here's a map I wouldn't mind getting evaluated, it's a standard action map:

Seems a little lifeless to me atm. Some of the jumps are nice, and the tiles are ok, but I don't get much satisfaction from playing it and the atmosphere is almost entirely lacking.

Whenever I find myself in this trap I delete what I have and start again with the same theme. If I can't breath more life into it after a few goes, then I put it on the back burner until I'm inspired to pick it up again.

Hmm, you're right. I think maybe less sparse object placement and more intense enemy placement could save it though, i'm not quite ready to abandon it yet :p
Thanks heaps
