Yes my soul will be hammer smashed into gutter and splashing smelling mud..!
Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. Okay, so after being up for 24-36 hours, NUMA has gone back to being over quota. How the heck?

a) Hey! How have you been?Nexx wrote:Okay, so after being up for 24-36 hours, NUMA has gone back to being over quota. How the heck?
b) I'm thinking it's possible we've hit some sort of semi-permanent server-space cap and that every time NUMA goes back up we rush to use it and go above quota again. Unfortunately, that's a random guess and I really have no idea. Not only has Arachnid been impossible to get hold of, so has anyone in the community who has knowledge of GAE.

Is that done by # of page views? And is there a way Arachnid could figure out who's doing it?nevada wrote:or someone is intentionally taxing the system. it's not really hard to do, i capped it in 20 minutes when doing the numa stats

you know it could be anything really
i think it was the act of requesting over 200000 maps that made the server crap out
and the fact it is so easy to do repeatedly probably doesn't help
that said i think it's just data which at this point doesn't matter because there is a lot of it, ass in the air, ready to be raped by the abusive 13" cock of a malicious user dead set on tearing streaks of 503 over quota up and down its colon

Unless you have any way to see the IPs of people viewing NUMA, it's not something which is fixable. It's like we keep getting prank called, but can't change the number or block the other person.boustrophedon wrote:Easy to fix or hard to fix?nevada wrote:you know it could be anything really

if it is pageviews then try not to view too many, you can hover your mouse over a map & [for google chrome] a black box in the bottom letf corner shows the url of that map which also shows the map number, for NReality, also, posting a comment creates a new url, e.g. map 217400 has 28 comments, if you post a new comment then you create the url http://www.nmaps.net/217400#0028 or something similar.
well, technically the #0028 is just an "auto-page scroll" to that comment, but still.
& with the metanet hs boards being cleared of hackers, most people are getting highscores.
Also narc can be used to submit maps.
Also, the feedback button on the right of numa has a link to this, it may be a way of numa to see IPs i don't know what this is willard

A quick google search returns this. The fact that I've never seen this happen before makes me think that we might be under some kind of denial of service attack, but it could also be someone with a grudge against the community and a script to refresh pages or something along those lines. Is arachnid really the only one who is a technical admin to the site? We really need to swap somebody else in because I doubt he will ever be back long enough to help with anything.

Yeah that's the part that confuses me as well. :/ENT474 wrote:But then why isn't it being DOS'd all the time?
Unless we recently lost some kind of load balancing or some kind of botnet is trying to spam the site it makes no sense, because the page views are supposed to reset every day. (As per the link I posted earlier).

If you're pageviews reset every day, then the person is probably using a botnet.el_devo. wrote:Yeah that's the part that confuses me as well. :/ENT474 wrote:But then why isn't it being DOS'd all the time?

If they aren't, then the last time you whatever-went-down from your limit, and it came back online, someone just dos'd it and it went back up.
From what sidke said, it sounds like numa can't handle very many requests at once if he crashed it just by making it display 20000 maps. You could do that easily with a macro or a simple dos on one computer... but that sounds kinda lame and unlikely for a website that has been up so long, cuz I remember the traffic it used to get.

I used a little macro to rate a Pheidippides map 125 times a few years ago. Guess NUMA was stronger then. Now it wanes like Gondor.
