Thats right, today and today only, the original Half Life is 98 cents on steam.
I just bought it, since I never got the chance to play the original.

I guess since this is only going to last a day, this is also the 'discuss Half Life 1' thread...

Woooooooooooooooo! Just beat the game! I was hoping it would help to explain more of Half-Life 2's setting, but considering the fact that the world of Half-Life one is pretty similar to modern times, it didn't help much at all.
Still an amazing game, though.

AF it should. Apart from the combine bit.

Spoilers:
HL1 story stuff

Gman takes you at the end (Why you're there in HL2) and the portal attracted the combine and chucked all the head crabs and stuff all over.

This might make you all happy. There's this mod called Sven, and it allows you to play Half-Life 1 Cooperatively. Although, it's a little buggy in a way if you play the Half-Life 1 maps, but it's still amazingly fun. Another thing, you can also play custom maps.

Apart from the combine bit? It seems like the combine bit is the entire thing about Half-Life 2. Or maybe it's just me.

Ya, the more I play HL1 the more I realize there is very little story at all and that HL1 fans filled in most of it.
Still a fun game though for 98 cents. (I'll take my gravity gun though ;D )

Whaaaat? The big thing about Half-Life was that it told a story without ever taking you out of first-person. Tell me you at least ran into ethical dilemmas about killing the innocent fauna of a foreign world. I mean, if you didn't get that, you might as well return the game right now.

Yes, there is a story, but compared to HL2 (and EP1/EP2), it is much more vague. For instance, the game never really shows you that the aliens showed up because of the experiment-gone-wrong (if I remember right, it doesn't even tell you exactly what the experiment is), they just kinda show up after everything blows up.

But anyone who knows anything would have been able to pick up on that. That's one of the good things about the plot, they don't just tell it to you out in the open, they lay it down for you to figure out by yourself, and don't insult your intelligence (unless you're 5 years old, in which case it could be difficult to understand what's going on).
