Is Steam worthwhile?

I've seen a lot of games up on steam, cheaper or with "extra offers". Is Steam worth it, because I've seen some criticism of it that makes it look very bad.

Any criticism that you've seen of Steam has either been made up or is entirely inconsequential. Steam is an excellent avenue if you want to buy games and don't care about owning a physical copy.

The most common problems people have with it is either a buggy client (in most cases this doesn't affect games) or about 1% of people who have real problems with the service (account getting hacked or something) have a hell of a time getting it sorted out. 99% of the userbase is pretty damn happy (me included)

Apart from reasons already mentioned, every now and again Steam has some utterly ridiculous sales. We're talking upwards of 95% off.

Be careful though, for if you DO decide to use it, you'll most likely be sucked into the sales. I mean for fucks sake...I own 186 Games and I didn't even pay for them in full (mostly, anyway)

Massive sales, some games (Portal!) end up being free for short periods of time; there's no reason why you shouldn't get the (free) Steam client and even just keep it around waiting for great deals, if you want to be cheap. Yeah, you can get sucked into the mad savings and end up buying a ton of great games at really low prices. Is that a point against it? Something like that.

I'd definitely so 'just okay'. One of the points which (amazingly, in my opinion) hasn't been mentioned, is loading/updating times. My Steam will often spend forever logging in, and has (more than twice) decided it would download a 5 or 6 GB update for TF2, whereas others I've talked to who've been playing TF2 only got a 30 MB update.

However, on the upside, is is very good for organising a games library, and very VERY good to buy games from, especially during the holiday sales. My God are games cheap then.

Overall, I'd certainly recommend it, as the updating problems are often infrequent and don't occur on most people's Steams (to my knowledge).

The only thing bad about Steam is the fact that their Support tends to be unhelpful at best (at least they were when my account got disabled for no reason).

Otherwise, it's great. :D

Might want to post a link that works.
Realized it probably isn't working because Steam is currently screwy.

It shows it as worth $0.00 with no games on mine. Were you showing off your lack of anything?

i disagree, my account got jacked (they changed the password and started to phish from my friend list) and steam got my shit back in less then 24 hours.

They closed all of my support tickets without ever specifying what caused my account to get disabled. I didn't get hacked/phished though.
