My current system is an XPS M1530. Anything current it runs on low-medium with around 30 FPS. Not ideal, and I'm upgrading soon.

What I'm after is suggestions of games I'll be able to run on full that still have a deal of flair about their presentation.

An example I can give is F.E.A.R. I'd played it a long time ago on my older system on medium, now I can manage High with 60+fps. Perfect.

I've also picked up a copy of Doom 3.

Don't limit this just to FPS, and yes I'm after games from similar eras that both look great and play well and will allow me around 60fps. Just to keep me going until my new system arrives.

Thanks in advance.

Played it. Completed it. Check. We've already kind of had this conversation. ;)

To clarify: I really want games I can play on full with decent FPS. I've never had a system that's up do date enough to play the latest on high, and my system's last port of call for this was around the times of the games mentioned in the OP.

So anything that fits that criteria.

I played Far Cry to the end, but on an extremely underpowered machine. Might take a look now, thanks for the reminder.

Not sure about The Sims, but I'll take a look at GTA.

Cheers.

You kids and your 30fps, back in my day we chugged a long at 12fps (yup my old machine was a piece of crap).

More on topic: Evil Genius, Supreme Commander, Unreal Anthology, Thief 1 to 3, Dungeon Keeper 1 or 2, Warcraft III, Fable the lost chapters, neverwinter nights, Black and White, Heroes of Might and Magic (1 to 5), Deus Ex, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Crysis (Not joking, it actually runs on quite a big range of machines if you don't try and max the settings and looks pretty good on low), Anything Source engine(Half life 2, team fortress 2, portal, gmod etc.), Men of War, Mount and Blade (Warband), Penumbra, Sam & Max, Quake (1 to 4), Secret of Monkey island (special edition), Civilization IV, Titan Quest, Torchlight, Trackmania and X-COM.

This is not as light as would seem. Sure the graphics are easy on your GPU, but this is absolutely the most CPU intensive game I've ever ran. Once your city passes 20k people or so, your laptop will be chugging to keep up, I can hit about a 80k on my desktop before I start running in to speed caps (2.4ghz quad, although this isn't multithreaded, so it mostly bogs down one core).

Thanks for the suggestions guy,s but I really want games like FEAR and DOOM3 with strong graphics.

I'm really interested in experiencing the best graphics I can squeeze from this thing while retaining a playable frame-rate.

FEAR 2's demo runs great on my system at high, so I think I'll go for that next.

No, that's the entire point of this.

I'm more than well versed in good gameplay, but I've never been able to keep up with the graphical trend as I've always had more important things to invest my moola in than PC components.

Having stumbled upon FEAR after forgetting it for so long (due to it having an awful fps on low on my old machine) and discovering not only a great game but a great game with great graphics, I'm interested in experiencing the mix in as wide a variety of games as possible.

Great graphics aren't the most important part, but if you can get a mix of that AND all the other good stuff you're onto a winner. Until my new machine arrives, this is what I'm interested in.

Except that all of these games have great graphics. Every last one has the polish and refinement expected in modern gaming.

May I recommend Link to the Past?

Serious Sam: The First and Second encounter.
Doom (Yes, Doom 1 and 2. (Better if played on Skulltag))
Alien Breed, if you can find a copy
Painkiller
Worms Armageddon

This is a shit list and most of those were made a while ago. But I don't care, they're all GREAT.

Picked up a copy of The Witcher, which is awesome so far. Recommended to those with slightly older machines.
