I'm about to make half of you cry, sorry.

I never played the first one, but the second one looks interesting. I just don't feel I'd be very good at it.

Oh, you have to give it a go. It's so so so good. Even if you don't think you'll be good at it, give it a look anyway

I believe this is the third portal 2 thread.

Which is to say, we are stoked.

This is like the video game equivalent of saying you never learned to breath. It is simply not something you should have a choice about.

Will you have to have played the first to understand the second, though?

Don't listen to him. From what I've seen, there will be a few little jokes that you won't get without playing the first game, but if you are quick to pick up on the dialog you should be all right.

Here is the part of the story I think you'll need to be up to speed in Portal 2, summarized in one (short) sentence.

You killed a crazy ass murderous robot

Yeah, there is no reason to not read spoilers of the game if you want to know the plot of the first one:

You, a female possibly named Chell, wake up in a white cubic laboratory. You are addressed by a malfunctioning, menacing and occasionally hypocritical robot named GlaDOS. (Think Marvin from hitchhiker's guide only evil and a woman.) You, after going through a few rooms, receive a gun that lets you shoot a blue portal. The portal connects to preset orange portals; you can shoot a blue portal anywhere on white walls and put any object, including yourself, through to the orange side. Eventually, you get a second component of the gun that lets you shoot orange portals as well. The robot goes insane and tries to kill you; you escape by solving puzzles using physics. There is no fall damage. she promises you cake at the end but then instead she tries to throw you in a fire pit but then you go through the back of the lab, which is strangely abandoned. You see other patients that have written stuff like "the cake is a lie" and eventually, you kill the bitch. Then a song plays that's sung by GlaDOS over the image of a cake, which implies that the cake was not a lie. Finally, you are dragged away by something that sounds like a robot from the wreckage of the lab.

There is no real reason to not play the first portal though.

Yes! Do it! Get the Orange Box so I'll have someone to play TF2 with.

I hope the voice for that first drone is a place-holder, it's really lacking in charm.

Aside from that, this looks epically wonderful.

And yes, I would /strongly/ recommend playing Portal 1 to get the most from the experience. There will no doubt be references to the first game that will be greatly satisfying to be in on.

Also, it's awesome.

I agree on the voice, it sounds a little off. I don't mind it, though.

Portal 2 can now be preordered! And I already have! Literally within 3 minutes of it going up. Because I'm a Valve game whore and want to give them all my money. Also flowers are filled with bees.

Anyway. $45. Comes with a free copy of Portal (which you can gift if you own it). Those who buy it on PS3 get a PC copy as well.

This is the best news I've heard today. I've seen enough people crushed by giant diamonds ;___;.

Oh well, time to find somebody who doesn't have Portal.

Are you serious? Where can I see this deal? Where can I take advantage of it? EBGames (canada) doesn't seem to carry that deal through. Do I need to get it from the US to get that deal?

EDIT: I found the deal, and its just as awesome as I thought it would be. Valve FTW, Amazon FTW.

Oh hey if you guys are looking for people who don't already have the game to give it to, I've never played Portal 1 and was thinking about getting it, do either of you still have it?

Just to clarify, all copies of the PS3 version of the game will net you a free Steam version -- additionally, you can play the two games cross platform.
