EDIT
Steam weekend deal is done! However, direct2drive are offering the game for half-price still. Not sure how long it's on offer for though, so grab it while it's hot.

-

Man, I've been wanting to try this game for a while now and as soon as the deal came up I snapped myself a copy.

And I'm glad I did.

This is probably the coolest game I've played in a LONG time. Think Fallout3 meets GTA meets some kind of cell-shaded stylistic art-explosion. It's one of the most fun experiences I've had in a long time. Everything is just a joy. The Ui, the mission system, the dialogue and text...

The game itself is primarily an FPS, but it has RPG elements. You aim to fire, and you need to hit your target as in all FPSs, but background stats boost your firing ability. Accuracy increases crit chance, for example.

There are also skill trees that enhance use of certain weapons/grant you abilities.

There are four classes: Hunter (sniper), Soldier (Big Guns), Melee (PUNCH), and Siren (Elemental damage, think mage).

You level as you go, increasing your abilities and armour and weapons.

The coolest part for me is the loot system. Very Diablo, the game literally rains new items on you and you get to pick and choose depending on the items inherent strengths and how they bolster your classes potentials.

There's also a pretty great co-op option. You can link up with friends and take on missions with up to other players. The downside to this is that you can join a group with a massively OP (in comparison to yourself) leveled player who could rush missions (making you feel like a tag long in your own game), or even kick the hell out of you for fun (p2p is activated via friendly melee fire), but if you find a friend of similar level to hunt through the game with it really is a very enjoyable experience.

I'd recommend you guys grab a copy, it's only £15. If you can get four of you together you can get the 4 pack and save a few quid (I did this with a random on the steam forum, via PP you're relatively protected in case of scam).

Anyway, have a look, see if you like, get it if you do. If so, I'll see you in game soon!

I've heard great things about the multi-player? About how many hours would you expect to leech from the singleplayer?

Well, so far I've primarily been playing the SP. And it's really something. It's like an FPS dungeon crawler with massive open ended environments. Just found my first vehicle too, and they handle so well (think Halo - the game is developed by Gearbox Software who ported the Halo PC versions).

I'd imagine, from my experience so far and from what I've read, that this is going to be a decent investment of SP time. I'd imagine equal to Fo3 at least. And as you can invite your chums to jump in with you at any point, if you decide that concentrating on SP is more your bag to begin with you won't be missing out.

I snatched a copy the second I noticed that it was on sale, but haven't had the time to try it out yet. I've been neglecting some work, so I probably won't be able to try it for a while, too. :(
But it's right here waiting for me.

Let me know when you want to try out the MP. I don't mind making a new character as I want to try all the classes anyway.

3 hours in and it's still as fantastic.

Okay, so I gave in and started playing. I stopped at the "jump the wall and open the switch" quest.
I'm playing as a soldier because that seemed like a good class to start with, and so far, I'm loving it. It's just as I thought it'd be: a glorious combination of Diablo and Fallout 3. Highly recommended.

Excellent. That'll put around level 10, right? (If you were like me and scoured every nook and took all the side quests that is).

I'm a Hunter Sniper/Gunslinger tree. If you get some time later we should hook up for a bit and check out the co-op.

Well, I'm at the cusp of level 14 (did a few more quests on the other side of the wall), and I just got my ass packaged, shipped, and delivered to me by Marty and Whatsisface over in the Hills.

Sounds good. You live in Old America, so that'd put you at basically GMT -0, right?

If you only get one of the DLC packs get the secret armoury of general knoxx, it's end game stuff but raises the level cap to 61 and adds some truly awesome stuff.

Incidentally 360 version, level 57 or so.

edit: Oh and I'm a hunter (Fun fact with certain class mods + skill tree lay out you can make the bird have essentially instant cooldown)

Nice, I'm halfway through 14 myself so we're pretty even.

I'm not sure if you've done it yet, but when you get to the mine key mission make sure you repair the damaged Claptrap. Backpack SDU reward there, very handy.

I'm GMT on the money, honey.

Imma bump this, I know it hasn't fallen far but I'm going to URGE anyone who hasn't taken advantage of this offer to do so NOW.

It really is the coolest game I've played in some time, and £15 is an absolute bargain!

Is that inside Sledge's hideout? Cuz I inadvertently stumbled in there (after collecting all of the sniper rifle bits), realized where I was and that I didn't want to try that quest yet, and immediately ran back out. Cuz, like, I have the quest sitting in my log, but I haven't really attempted it yet.

Yeh, it's that one. The spare part you need to fix the claptrap is hidden above your head on a pipe. Took me a while to find it (the waypoint saying it was there and me not thinking to look up, etc..).

I'm level 21 now, btw. Had a bit of a Co-Op session earlier. Fantastic stuff.

Co-oping with a berszerker is amazing by the way. You'll just be wandering around minding your own business when you suddenly get ambushed by a huge amount of bandits, you try to hold your own but your ammo supply is slowly dwindling and there numbers don't seem to be, then lo what is this coming over the hill? It looks like some kind of muscle-ee mass charging it's way towards you! It's getting closer, closer, closer! It flies past with a scream coming from it's snarling lips, you look away out of sheer terror, the screams of it and bandits alike becoming even more horrifying every millisecond this goes on. Then, nothing, just silence, sheer silence, you turn around meekly to peek at what has happened, once you manage to peek between your fingers you see brick chilling next to a big meaty pile of pulp.

I have me and two friends that want it, I'm looking for a 4th. Does anyone here (who has a paypal account and has been around long enough where I'd trust them to pay up) want it for $18.75?

So I started a new game as a Berserker and instantly regretted all the time I wasted playing my Soldier. Berserker is much better suited to my playing style. Though it was nice, as a soldier, having the ability to lay down a distraction so you could line up a nice succession of criticals, I think berserking more than makes up for it. To wit, when I faced Nine-Toes as a soldier, I died once and barely managed to survive the second time around. But as a berserker of the same level and with the same gear, I casually crammed one of his dogs down my gullet on my way to inserting my fist down his throat and into his lungs. The other dog was then trivially easy to punch in the skull until death.
Same story with Scar, except that Scar started to run away from me when I dealt him too much damage too fast. I like it when the game throws in elements like that. It really enhances the experience.
So I'm a level 9 Berserker right now (only played for a short while), and I'm not planning on revisiting my Soldier at all. The Soldier only seems good for co-op, seeing as how his best abilities are the ones that give bonuses to allies near his sentry.

Beserker does look cool. I was in a Coop game with one who literally tore through waves of bandits. I'm still loving my Hunter, though, especially now I've powered him up some.

I'll be making a Siren soon, so I'll see if I can catch up to you with her.

On a side note, for those who missed the Steam deal the game is available at half price on Direct2drive. I'll update the OP. With this link.

Oh, I may have forgotten to mention this in this thread (though I announced it proudly in IRC):
I beat the game as a Berserker a few days ago.
I was level 35 (first playthrough) when I killed the Destroyer. In fact, I leveled up during the fight (and hid behind a column while I chose where to put my skill point).

I played him like the soldier was intended to be played, for the most part. I don't know why all these different and retarded playing styles are associated with these characters -- I just chose to play sensibly. Brick is supposed to use shotguns and rocket launchers, but I used a battle rifle and a sniper rifle almost exclusively for most of the game.
My four weapon slots had:
  • shotgun - only used to one-shot opponents in melee range, when I didn't just melee them in the head for the same effect
  • battle rifle - primary weapon, used against damned near everything
  • sniper rifle - a sniper headshot began pretty much every one of my encounters
  • rocket launcher - used on turrets, and not a whole lot else
My main strategy was to plink away at a distance, preferably from high ground and behind cover, battle rifle everyone who got close, and shotgun everyone who got even closer. Turrets were sniped down with a highly accurate rocket launcher once all melee opponents were headless. Berserking was only really used when overwhelmed with melee-ranged opponents, and to regenerate health between encounters.

My toughest fight by far was against Master McCloud. Even after I focused fire on one of his cronies and took him down, the combined fire of the other two was still enough to take me down while Berserking. I think I died three times during that battle, until I killed his second guard and then circle-strafed McCloud to death with a shotgun.

As for the Destroyer, I took cover behind the left pillar and shot his eye until he died. I emptied a full sniper mag into that thing, and finished it off with most of my battle rifle ammo. It never broke my shield.

In my Lilith game, I'm going to attempt to stick with the associated playing style, but I doubt that will last long. Anything but sniper / battle rifle just seems ineffective and even suicidal to me. Although so far I'm surviving quite well with my 100% Daze on Melee strategy.
