Hi, guys. It's about time I put up a discussion thread. There are many ways a Pokemon battle can be run, so it's difficult to decide what formats this competition will be run in. If you've got any ideas to share, now is your chance to pitch in before I set anything concrete down.
At the moment, however, this is how I'd envisage this tournament to be run:
- League/Knockout format
- Best of 3/5 matches
- All standard clauses will be used (Sleep, Freeze, Evasion, etc.)
- No Ubers allowed (and legendaries?)
- Maximum two Pokemon from OU tier? (We'll use Smogon's tier listings.)
Feel free to post any suggestions.

Dont put a limit on OU tier. Just on Uber tier.

Ice Climbers are awesome. Deal with it.

No legends is daft, Ubers is necessary, if we played UU most of the once only catching Pokemon would be ruled out. Only a select few with severe weaknesses to common types will be in. Generally Articuno, Moltress, Ho-oh as examples. Considering they're 4x weak to SR, that would work fine.
Standard clauses is fine.
If we're going to play UU, completely play UU, don't allow OUs in there, allow the 4 BLs in though (Staraptor, Gallade and two others).

I really like the idea of a UU Tournament, but allow the BL guys in there too.
Standard clauses is fine, i guess.

I'm not entirely sure if I'd be able to do this. I could try, but I really dislike 4th gen. -.-

I second PALEMOON. All of my favorite Pokemon are either BL or UU, so I'd hate having to pick an OU team. :(
That said, I can't compete until I get my laptop de-school-issue-firewalled when I graduate, which isn't for another few weeks. I hope this doesn't get going sooner.

That's a good idea.Chase wrote:If we're going to play UU, completely play UU, don't allow OUs in there, allow the 4 BLs in though (Staraptor, Gallade and two others).
I think atm it is just Gallade, Staraptor, and Raikou. They are considered on the Ban List though, because they are considered broken for standard play. That's what I heard, I don't get it either, tbh. :/
We can host the tournament on my server, but I'm going to need to make a website first so we can have a site to connect to when registry is down. I haven't been able to set my server up lately, but I'm sure things will get sorted out.

You don't /have/ to pick an OU team. You could do just as well fighting with a UU team, it's just difficult with the broad difference in stats.Pheidippides wrote:I second PALEMOON. All of my favorite Pokemon are either BL or UU, so I'd hate having to pick an OU team. :(

The reason why I wanted to limit number of OUs is because I don't want to see a tournament full of Salamence, Heatrans, and Tyranitars.

I like the idea of no Legendaries and the OU cap, mixes things up a bit.
Also, would this be on Shoddy, or a proper DS Wifi bash?

Ad. This is more than likely going to use Netbattle Supremacy. Better than the current version of Shoddy.

Mmmhmmm. The platform would definitely be on Netbattle Supremacy. Mostly because most of us don't have a DS/Pokemon cartridge with a full competitive team to boot.

Wait a minute.
Define "no legendaries". Most of the Uber Pokemon are legendaries but some legendaries aren't in the Uber tier. Zapdos, Celebi, both Shaymin forms, and some others are legendaries but are classified as OU by Smogon's standards, which we are apparently treating as authoritative.
I'm interested in participating in this tournament, even though I've never played Pokemon competitively. How does this online simulator work? What's the GUI like? Also, is there any training involved, or it just pure competition? I've poked around Smogon and they have a Shoddy battle server. Can we get any Pokemon we wish with the movepools we want and the proper EVs, etc?

I'd assume those OU legendaries would be out as well, but maybe George or someone can confirm that?Twistkill wrote:Wait a minute.

Also, the online simulator simulates purely the Pokemon metagame. There is no training involved; it is pure battling. You can use Netbattle to make a six-Pokemon team with any Pokemon you wish (within our own self-imposed limits), with whatever EVs you want, and if these Pokemon are capable (in the real Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum games) of having the moveset you want, then by all means give it to them. The GUI is pretty straightforward. Pick your Pokemon from the list (type to find it faster), pick your moves from a list, use sliders/enter values to give EVs, choose gender/Hidden Power/shinyness... It's all there and pretty easy to use.

That sounds awesome. I'm definitely interested in this. When and if we get the particulars, count me in for some pokemanz.Pheidippides wrote: Also, the online simulator simulates purely the Pokemon metagame. I put the question mark next to 'no legendaries' because I'd like to hear what you guys think about it. I'm running this tournament for all of us, so I'd like to reach a majority on the rules before the competition takes place. It's really a 'you guys decide' thing.

It'd be better to put Ubers out of play, otherwise they're going to be the focus of the battles.
I think we'd see some really heated battles if it was restricted to UU, or possibly ST. Also, I'd suggest that the competion should be either completely Knockout, or League tables to begin with and Knockout rounds towards the end.
Any idea when the tournament's going to be?

I agree about the UU restriction, but what's ST? And could you explain League vs. Knockout format? I'm assuming Knockout is like a tournament bracket, while League involves more of a rotation, but maybe somebody could shed some light on things for us n00bz.Drathmoore wrote:It'd be better to put Ubers out of play, otherwise they're going to be the focus of the battles.

Ubers are definitely out of play. No question about that. I imagine ST refers to Standard Play.
The competition will be run as a Knockout or League depending on numbers. The format of a knockout is simple. You lose a round, you're out. That's all there is to it. I imagine a league format might do better, with a rotational basis. We could run the competition for any number of rounds, and have a Finals knockout series where the top 4/8 would fight for the No. 1 spot.
I'll be able to start the tournament as soon as we can decide on rules and stuff.

'kay, UU listings are here while this would also include NU (Never Used) and probably the few in BL (Abomasnow, Froslass, Raikou, Gallade, Staraptor).

ST refers to Standard Tier - those between OverUsed and UnderUsed. And also thinking about it, a league tournament would probably be better, seeing as you can focus more on having fun than worring about whether you're going out in the next round...

this is perfect for the tournament. Also, although a League setup might be a little harder to set up i think it would be a lot more fun for everybody playing.
As far as clauses go, the only one i really hate with a fiery passion is the Items clause. Can we please not use that >_>

I'd be interested in the tournament if the rules were more clearly defined outside of Pokespeak. I've only ever played on my own, and most of your acronyms are confusing.
