i didn't see a thread for this. so, i'll start one.

if your out there looking for a new game on any console, whether it be ps3, xbox360 or anything else, but don't know what to buy and want others' opinions, then post here asking for recomendations. also, if - like me - you have narrowed down possibilities for your next game, but can't decide between 2 or 3, then hopefully this thread could help as people will be able to give "suggestions" as to which they think is better and help you decide - that's the idea anyway.

even if this only helps me out, i'll be a happy man. so, to start the thread of, i want to know what you think between...

Killzone 2 or Far Cry 2?

Killzone 2, I've heard about a lot of things that bother people in FC2 but nothing but good about KZ2 (Excluding yahtzee).

I've also heard bad things about FC2. Go for Killzone.

FC2 = 50k of open ended jungle with multiple ways to approach missions. Night and day cycles add a depth to play, for example: if you have a mission that requires you to assassinate an enemy who's safely sat inside a tightly guarded base, you'd be best to take a nap at a safe house and wait till the cover of darkness is on your side. Weather affects it too: you can set fires and let the wind carry it toward enemy encampments, then take out the survivors yourself. You earn currency as you go, which you can use to upgrade your safe house and your arsenal. Weapons you pick up from rag tag militia won't be as durable as those bought from the gun shops, and will grow dirty faster, frequently jam, and eventually break. When you take a large amount of damage, before you heal you'll have to perform some self repair such as removing bullets or snapping a broken arm back into place. There's also a buddy system that allows you to team up with various NPCs who will allow you access to various missions and side-quests and items. Graphics aren't as immediately spectacular as Killlzone, but the sheer scale, massive diversity of the various areas, night and day/weather cycles, and the dynamic encounters, really add a sense of realism and make the island seem alive and properly inhabited.

KZ2 - (from what I've seen/read) - Spectacular graphics and art design (some of the best seen yet this side of Crysis), heart pounding and intense guerilla combat ranging from all out squad battles battles (reminiscent of ww2), to one man against many tactical duck and cover encounters, to stealth and recon missions. The play is linear but very diverse. A new duck and cover system (much like ther GOW mechanic), adds a tactical level of play, along side a two weapon limit and health recharge (think Halo), making run and gun tactics almost impossible in most situations. There's also what seems to be an very comprehensive multiplayer mode (lots of options, a decent amount of weapons and maps and gametypes). IT looks like a stunner, a game I'd by a PS3 for.

-

It depends what type of game you'd prefer: sandbox fps with slight rpg elements, or linear but diverse guerilla warfare. Both games are worth the purchase, imo. I'd recommend reading up and watching some trailers (gametrailers.com is best) before you make up your mind.

It's funny that you should say that, because one of the most common criticisms I've heard of FC2 is that it is very repetitive, especially between missions because you have to constantly bash through the same respawning enemies whenever you go anywhere. Naturally, this quickly alienates everyone who wants diversity and variation. For comparison purposes, the most common criticism of Killzone 2 seems to be that it's not original or innovative at all.

Also, Metacritic for Far Cry 2 and Killzone 2, if you find that helpful.

But you don't have to bash through anything. You can easily avoid any encounter in the game by scouting around the enemy groups. I think most people weren't expecting such a sanbox environment and attempted to play it like a linear shooter. This is reflected well in the professional reviewers scoring the game highly (mostly in the 80-90% range), while user scores tend to be lower.

that being said, moving between some missions can take a while, and the open ended nature can confuse if you're not paying attention, but the respawning enemy issue isn't as much of a problem as many make out.

is far cry 2 anything like fallout 3? cos that game was epic. if it is anything like that then i'd probably buy it, cos that is probably the best game i have ever played. but at the minute i'm swaying towards killzone 2. i'll be sure to check out the links you guys provided. cheers.

you can also discuss other games on this thread if you want, it isn't just for my benefit.

They are both very different, yet both fun at the same time, FO3 is more fun than FC2. Go for Killzone 2.

No, not really. FO3 is more of an rpg in FPS clothing, whereas FC2 is a FPS with sandbox tendencies. Don't get me wrong, for all my 'praise' FC2 is nowhere near a perfect game, and all the gripes people have with it are valid to a point, it's just the sort of game where you have to make your own fun. I know that's not supposed to be your job, and the devs should write the thing well enough for it to carry you along itself, but for all the flaws (thin story, respawning enemies, lack of wildlife, too big for its own good at times) there is a lot of room to improvise and create your own path.

Honestly, I'd go for KZ2 first. The game is obviously a landmark of some kind, and is being heaped with praise, whereas FC2 seems to be a love it or hate it experience. Perhaps buy KZ and rent FC?

Yes!

Resident Evil 4 (outstanding port, outstanding game! - best on Wii, imo), No More Heroes, Metorid.

Again, Resident Evil 4 is a great port with some substantial Extras over the Wii version.

Timsplitters 2, Timesplitters Future Perfect, Medal Of honour Frontline, Project: Snowblind, Red Faction, Half Life.

CoD 3 is just fine on the Ps2.

oh and RPGs?

Well, if you've been living under a rock:

Final Fantasy 10 (a beautifully realised game, imo).
Final Fantasy 12 (an odd departure, but again, a wonderful game).
Dark Chromicle (one of my absolute favourite games of all time).

For a more Hack n Slash less story driven game, try Balders Gate 2.

And the newest to be released, 'Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4', is apparently stunning. I might have to dig my ps2 out for this one.

I hear Suikoden was bad, never heard of Disgaea, Own almost every KH game release in the US (Dammit, why can't I find the GBA version? u.u), Steambot sounds good, as does persona 3.

I'd rather not go into the FF series. I'm not much for Turn based RPGs. In fact, the only FF game I've ever touched was FFVII: Dirge of Cerebrus, and that was because it was supposedly "innovative". I thoroughly enjoyed that one.

The last three I'll prolly check out. Also, because of your reccommendation, I'll probably get CoD3 as well.

My recommendations for any Nintendo console are the same of the NES:

Metroid, Mario, Zelda, and never, ever Star Tropics.

Well, I'll youtube it, if it's so great.

Also, for anyone who's interested, Rogue Galaxy is a nice game for the PS2.
