Halo - What does everyone think of it?

I'm just curious, seeing as I've started to get into it a lot, and I wanted other opinions on the game. I personally think it's a highly polished, well designed multiplayer experience that lacks depth and character in single player.

Yay!
I have Halo 1 and 2, but not Halo 3 (I don't have an Xbox 360), nor do I have Xbox Live.

I hate this series.
I played Halo 3 and the original once, I was bored to near-death.

I've only really ever played multiplayer, and the occasional co-op with a friend of mine.
It's very fun to play with a group of friends, which is really all you can ask for in a game.

The sequels are overrated.

The games is the source for some of the greatest ever multiplayer fun one will ever have. The novels are amazing, too. It really adds another facet to the already complex world of Halo.

Single player sucks, and while the multiplayer is fine, why would anyone play this game in a world that also offers Call of Duty 4 and Team Fortress 2?
So, Nay.

it seems a tad stupid, but it is good fun at times. i like the campaign for what it is, and for the flood; especially in #3. you just have to try to ignore the stupidity of it all every now and then. the lore is pretty well told aswell..
basically, well designed games that arent good if you want to think very much. i'd rather be playing mgs4 though.

I like it...great multiplayer...but they don't seem to understand that they should be keeping their better levels in, Halo2 lost Sidewinder, Halo 3 lost Blood Gulch...what the hell...

I'm not sure what you guys have against the campaign mode for Halo: CE. It's one of the most balanced (aside from a half an hour or so in Assualt on the control room where the backdrops repeat a little too often) and well threaded experiences I've ever had the pleasure of partaking in. Especially on legendary.
At the time especially - and even now - the Ai was especially smart and fun to battle on the higher difficulty settings, the introduction of the two weapon only system made for some interesting tactical decisions, the duck and cover aspects brought with the shield regeneration system added a subtle layer of strategy to battles, the marine interactions were amusing and keeping your comrades alive on higher settings was a fun challenge, the vehicle sections were an absolute dream (switching to third person was a master stroke), the open levels and battle set pieces were a refreshing antidote to the usual corridor crawling FPS designs.
I think Halo 2 became a little too cluttered for its own good, especially in terms of level design and enemy placement. The dual Wielding aspects I can't decide on either. The simplicity of Halo: CE was one of its main selling points for me, so many times FPS are bogged down with too many options, weapons, controls, whereas halo simply relied on a very satisfying and simple core engine and gameplay mechanic and shone through because of it. This especially comes to light in multiplayer battles (online on the PC) when two expert Spartans come up against each other with just a Magnum, the result is one of the most satisfying standoffs I've experienced in a multiplayer setting.
The main thorn in the side of this series is its Xbox exclusivity. When Halo: CE was released for the PC, it had so much potential for growth beyond its console origins. What we got instead was a rather lazy port and hardly any online support. Halo Custom Edition came too late, most of the original community had long moved on to more supported games. While Halo: CE PC still has an impressive community for such an old game (one that inspired a no CD update years after the last patch, a thank you of sorts to the community's loyalty), the absolute potential for the PC version was never achieved.
Halo 2 had great xbox live support, and I'm sure the same can be said for 3, it's just the potential for PC communities (modding especially) is far greater and is a real missed opportunity with these games. Shame.

Personally I think the FPS games are really mediocre and is highly over rated (Halo fan boy at college: H2alo has like the most multiplayer options ever!" Me: "Unreal Tournament 2004"). But I found Halo Wars to be really fun and I really like the story/universe.

It was the xbox's first big game so it got a lot of hype and what not, but Halo is no doubt a great game. The sequels aren't too spectacular, but the multiplayer aspect is always fun.

This game is an -extremely- standard shooter. It's not one of those games where you play it and you think, "Oh, I'm bored. This game is average." It's one of those games where you play it and become fully aware that there is nothing here that wasn't done somewhere else, and usually better.
Nothing too impressive.

I've played Halo 2, that was really good, but Halo 3 is considerably better, especially on Xbox Live. Both campaigns are brilliant in my opinion, despite Halo 3's being considerably shorter.

Campaign is alright... the first time. Online I only enjoy when with friends - all in all it's one of the most overhyped games/series ever. Right next to GTA and FF.
Next time you should have degrees of liking and disliking ;)

I do agree with you faemir, online play is better if you're playing or talking with friends.

3 things:
- I confess to being a FF fanboy and think you're wrong about FF's being overhyped.
- GTAIV was the most overhyped game EVER.
- and i think halo 3 is a great game, but i dont see the point of buying a game just because either
a) your friends are buying it
b)people have said it is a good game even though you have never played a similar game in your life.
but, i suppose everyone has their own opinions.

a) So you have someone to play online with other than complete strangers? All of my friends play COD WAW atm, so I'm planning on getting that soon. Not only because my friends are playing, it's also looking like a great game in it's own right.
b) That's exactly why I bought Halo ages ago; the rave reviews. And I've never regretted it :)
