Let's Play: Spelunky - Procedurally generated platformer!

This was all taken from this topic. The only reason why I copy it is because it provides a more thorough explanation that I.

Created by Derek Yu, that guy who runs TIGsource.
Submitted for the approval of The Midnight Society, I call this story... SPELUNKY! This is my latest game release and my first Game Maker game.

Probably the easiest way to describe Spelunky is that its (kind of) like La Mulana meets Nethack - every time you play the levels, items, monsters, and so forth, are all procedurally-generated. And the terrain is destructible and there are quite a few ways in which the various game elements can interact with one another.

My goal was to create a fast-paced platform game that had the kind of tension, re-playability, and variety of a roguelike. In roguelikes, the gameplay tells the story, and I wanted to give Spelunky that type of a feeling... but make the player rely on their reflexes rather than their brain (or knowledge of what 50 billion command keys do!). If there's a best of both worlds, that's what I was trying to go for.

But yeah, I'll leave it to you to decide whether I got the mix right or failed miserably! The game is not quite v1.0, but it has most of the elements that I wanted to get in. Hope you enjoy it, and I am eagerly awaiting your feedback, whether it's good, bad, or frickin' beautiful. I'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't break!

Many, many thanks to the beta testers, without whom this would not have been possible! Seriously, they contributed a ton of feedback, bug reports, and ideas to the game. If it wasn't for the constant tears in their eyes from my cruel lashes, I might have thought they even enjoyed it a bit. And thanks, ChevyRay, for letting me use your nifty screen-scaling code. Once I got it to work, it worked pretty beautifully.

K, that's all! Feedback away
Image

No runthrough will ever be alike, INFINITE replayability. The graphics are pretty good, it's like La Mulana but the graphics are much crisper. This game is amazing. Makes you feel like Indiana Jones. There's also a TON of different items in this you can find and buy: sticky bombs, pistols, shotguns, bow and arrow set, etc. Shows off some of the gameplay, enemies, and more importantly, traps!

Gameplay. That shows off the game, traps, and so on.

Download: Newest version 0.99.5

Either way, and this is what I'm saying, The game is amazing, try it.

I'm not a fan of its gameplay, but I like how the levels are procedurally generated.

I threw an arrow at the wall and it bounced off and killed me.

Although I'm still alive at the moment, this is about how far I am.

Also, it's level 10.

I died.. but hey, check this out.

Alien thing.

World 4, Level 12, the Temple. I died on level 13 thanks to an idol.

Another run through, and holy sweet jesus what is that?! And yes, it's spitting those flies at me.

I defeated the mummy thing, and I gained this golden staff thing. It fires those purple bubble things, and wouldn't you know it, they're homing, and it has unlimited ammo.

Now that I play this again, I actually quite like this. I suck at it, though. I usually die on Level 1 or 2.

By the way, I made it to the final boss on Level 16. I'm not going to spoil it, but once I finally... FINALLY figured out it's weakness, I died. I wanted to post a screenshot, but the game didn't take one for some reason. Either way, ever sense, I haven't been able to get back to it.

Where does the game save the stats of how many times you've played the game, what shortcuts you've unlocked, etc.? I can't find it.
Edit: Also, are there any shops past the first 4 levels? Never mind, I found one on the 5th level.

*Double-posts to resurrect topic*
Version 0.99.5 was released a few days ago! Link.
Oh, and here's a screenshot of the furthest I've ever gotten so far, shortly before I died:

I actually got slightly further, to the next world (the one with the mummies), but got owned by a trap right when I got there.

I recommend getting a shotgun as soon as possible. It's easiest to find them from shopkeepers. If a shopkeeper is selling a shotgun, you can just throw a rope in the shop, pick up the shotgun, climb onto the rope (staying as close to the floor as possible), and you can shoot the shopkeeper from the rope. Otherwise, you can just arm a bomb in your hands, and throw it in the shop right before it's about to explode.

Spelunky v 0.99.5 Check that out, a new update that addresses a few bugs here and there.

EDIT: My internet is going incredibly slow, but I'll upload it to Filefront, if that works for you.

7.85 MB. It's not large at all, and you should definately play it.

I've died hundreds of times and only gotten as far as level 6, but this game is a lot of fun. The randomised levels are nice and really prevent the game from being frustrating, which I'm sure it would be if you had to do the same level over and over again.

I've played the game around 350 times (not all of them serious attempts to beat the game), and I've gotten up to Level 13 (the first one with mummies). I died almost at the very beginning of the level because of one of the moving spike blocks (I was completely unprepared for it).

It comes as a .rar file, I think, so you need to use a program such as WinRar (free for evaluation) or 7Zip (free, open source) to extract the archive, and then just run the .exe.

Spelunky v0.99.8 has been released!

Edit: Woohoo I finally won once after 521 attempts! (I just got the shortcut to the 4th zone and surprisingly it only took me a few tries starting from there).
