I managed to get four Reclaimed metals thinking I was gonna be sporting the latest headgear like a jive mother when I noticed 3x Reclaimed = 1 refined; 4 refined + Token = class specific hat.

Two Camera Beards? Whoop-de-fuck.

A beard is not a gaddamn hat.
Wait - so you got 2 camera beards with your 3 refined?

Doesn't make sense considering the beard is in the Misc slot.
No, I just got them. I still have my 1x Refined.

Sorry, that entire last post was a blur of geek-rage.

Ah. I see. You can see here the possible crafting possibilities, although most (if not all) you should know already.

So hey, I'm sorry, but I think I can offer a fresh perspective given that I haven't played this game in a while and can therefore provide some external insight into the matter...
When did this game become World of fucking Warcraft?

Passage of time in the game is equivalent to gaining XP. You can speed up the process by playing well and attaining Achievements, which is exactly like undertaking a challenging quest for bonus XP.
In order to pass the time without being called a cheater, you have to participate in constant, mindless killing. WoW players would immediately recognize this as the grind.
And now we're collecting and making items. I bet you they'll introduce vehicles when you hit level 70. Oh, and that they'll introduce levels.

Playing for five hours for a hat -- how is this unlike killing 5 snow walruses (or what the fuck ever) for improved equipment?

I, too, believe the random drops idea was completely stupid. I'm rather in favor of Valve giving ever player the new weapons when they come out, as they are sidegrades, not upgrades (unless you're talking about the Equalizer, of course).

I only feel it's gonna get worse, Tsukatu, after Valve releases all the stuff from the Community Contribution thing going on. This game is getting way more complex than it needs to be.

The community stuff is literally only cosmetic. There aren't actually any game changing items being made available. The weapons are only /skins/. The hats are, well, hats.

Let me help you out with all of that.

Damage types? What about fire and the way it doesn't do much damage to other pyros, or people with the shield thing.
Armor? The shield, the backshield of the sniper, all of these change the damage received.
No random item drops, but there are random drops that are increased by killing folk.
Storyline? Read the comic book that accompanied the last update.
Ability to buy/sell items? Crafting.
Achievements basically = quests, since you can either wait to pick up a weapon randomly or you can embark on the quest to acquire it.
If you need a hint at character levelling, then explain why the items have seemingly meaningless levels themselves? :/
Weapon levelling? "

And the last one I've never heard of in an MMORPG, so I don't think it's particularly relevant.

I still find it to be pointless. The hats I think are okay, but the weapon skins are stupid. Leave it the way Valve intended it to be. I don't wanna play looking at 5 variations of the backburner.

I like the crafting update, you can actually get a hat if you play long enough now.

Orange- N cannot be spoken, or even thought about in my household. If my parents ever found out that I have played N since the cleansing, my life would be ruined. I keep the game in a multi-passworded .rar on a USB flash drive inside a locked boron alloy container that requires two keys to open (I keep one under the 64th hammer in my piano, and the other one in a small section of removable ceiling in the corner of the attic) hidden in a wall compartment lined with aluminium foil to prevent sonar detection behind my 375 kg cupboard, which is bolted to the floor - the only way to reach it is to abseil outside the fourth floor window and use a screwdriver to unfasten the screws holding the secret brick in place on the opposite side of the wall, but the screwdriver must be a specific type like the one I own, since if any other screwdriver comes into contact with the screws, the entire building will explode, as will a seperate charge placed inside the boron alloy container, rendering the USB useless. Even once the container is retrieved, attemping to open it without the arming pin in place (which is kept inside the battery compartment of my Maglite) will cause the water reservoirs lining the container to burst and react with the caesium lining, causing the container to burst into flames - the only way to prevent this is to use the arming pins to shut off the reservoirs with a sliding steel door. The USB itself contains an accelerometer linked to an explosive charge, meaning that if the USB detects its own movement speed as being greater than 5 cm/s, it will explode - any person attempting to steal it would have to move at a uselessly slow speed. Once plugged into a computer, the USB will upload a ghost virus onto it, leaving no traces. Only the right password can deactivate this virus, and if it is left on the computer for more than six hours, it will format all drives.

As you can see, I take my N playing very seriously.

Guiseppi- I'd much rather watch animals get boned in the ass.

Yanni- If it's glad, it's not rape.

Tsukatu- I refuse to use throw-away bags for such a frequent purpose as buying groceries. Instead, I've collected the hair of my two pet dogs and have woven them together into an all-natural, 100% environmentally friendly bag that I bring with me everywhere. And when I buy products that come in glass and plastic containers, I track down the company that packages them and ship back their containers so that they don't take up space in landfills.

Yeah, I use plastic.

Tsukatu- I hear Ebony Online is great, too. Cum save your princess, my lord!

Ska- UR MUM LIKE IS SPICY

Ska- why d i get the feeling what i typed will end up in the quote depository; or worse: someone's sig.

KinGAleX- I did it on the couch a little while ago.

I think they should have put the hats onto the old achievement system. This random drop thing discourages skill and encourages idling.

Under this same type of logic, minus item buying/selling/trading/crafting, Halo is also an RPG.

TF2 is nowhere close to an RPG. The claims of such are ridiculous. Even CoD is more of an RPG (remember, it has actual character and weapon leveling)

I don't follow, smartalco. We're showing elements of similarities between RPG's and TF2. Halo does not meet many of these criteria. Damage Types, armor, random item drops, ability to buy/sell items, quests, unlockable weapons? These don't exist in Halo. Think before you type, please.

Counter:
Damage Type, armor
Examples:

Have you tried shooting someone in the head with the BR vs body, and then the same with the AR? The BR does insane damage to the head, while comparatively nothing to the body. The AR does a little extra damage to the head over body IIRC, but it isn't nearly as drastic. Other weapons have no difference between head and body. (You can take this as armor difference or damage type, I don't really care).
Turn on the Tilt skull. Bullets do nothing to shielded armor. Alien weapons still do full damage. [X] Damage Types, [X] Armor
Plasma pistol rapes shields, hardly does anything to health. [X] Damage Types
Brutes in the campaign have various ranks, and therefore, armor. [X] Armor
Needler. Does almost nothing unless you get 10 (or so, don't remember exact number) needles in someone, then they pretty much just die. [X] Damage Types
The overshield doesn't do anything but give you more armor for a life. [X] Armor
Fire. [X] Damage Types
There is a series of objective modes where the VIP/flag/ball carrier has additional health/armor (the most popular of which is Grifball, but as another example there is a CTF mode where the flag carrier has double HP but moves at half speed). [X] Armor
random item drops
There are multiplayer modes that spawn you with a random weapon (not particularly popular modes, but they do exist). [X]
This isn't exactly random, but everyone you kill drops all their items (which seems to be a very RPG-like construct, kill a guy, get his stuff). Similarly, weapons respawn in multiplayer.
ability to buy/sell items
I specifically said in my post that Halo doesn't have this, but I just thought of a similar mechanic (since I also said 'trading' in my post). You can only carry two weapons. This leads to choices about what weapons you are going to carry with you depending on what you are good with and knowledge of what you are going to be fighting, sounds vaguely RPG like, no?
quests
So now TF2 achievements count as quests but Halo achievements don't?
unlockable weapons?
In the storyline you don't have access to some weapons/vehicles/items until you have sufficiently progressed through the game. There isn't that much of a difference between that and killing a lot of dudes to unlock weapons.
Obviously some of those were a stretch, but trying to deny that Halo has damage types and armor is ridiculous, as is counting TF2 achievements as quests and not Halo's (Halo's are just 'kill 5 dudes with a sniper rifle in a match' where TF2's are 'kill 100 dudes with a sniper rifle', about the only difference is persistent vs. per-match)
If you want another example, look at MAG. Theres character leveling, weapon/item unlocks, armor, achievements, healing (something TF2 has, but not Halo), and even the ability to re-spec your skill tree. Does that make it an RPG? Fuck no.

I was wrong about quests, and I am sorry for that.

That being said, MAG is being sold as an RPG shooter. Your argument that TF2 does not have RPG elements becoming more involved in it is structured on a generic FPS being similar to TF2 and an RPG FPS that bears some similarities to TF2 as well.

Nobody is saying TF2 is an RPG, but I think you made a checklist that defines what an RPG is, and then showed three games that meet that entire checklist.

Three games that aren't RPGs. My entire argument is that just because a game has RPG like elements, it doesn't have to be an RPG. I just argued that Halo is an RPG! Under nearly identical criteria to why TF2 is being called as such! You'd get laughed out of any gaming discussion to seriously contend that Halo is an RPG. (Also, where have you seen MAG marketed as an RPG? I've just seen 'Hey, we have 256 players! Come play our game! (which I found the demo quite fun btw) And its storyline is even more pointless and unimportant to the game than TF2s)

I'm pretty sure Tsuki was using hyperbole to take the piss. He wasn't actually saying TF2 is becoming an RPG, just that many of the RPG elements are detrimental to play.

The random drop and craft system being the main culprits. And I agree with him.

If there were a way to tie in drops with certain in game criteria it would be a much more rewarding system. Every 100 opp you kill you get a class weapon for the person you're using or something (perhaps not a perfect example, but you get what I mean).

As it is, the game just feels less fun when people left and right are receiving bunches of multiple drops if your'e getting nothing, even if the items are cosmetic.

Duplicate drops are what I mean, ie: you need them to craft hats and any items that you found via the achievement system that you deleted (unless of course you want to reset your entire stat database to start over).

Currently waiting for hours for the chance to find something that you can use to slowly break down into the mats needed to craft the item you want is a fucking joke.

Oh, that's great! I honestly cannot wait for this (as a DM I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun!)

On a side note, I recently took up idling in my spare time. Due to this I'm now in possession of a Noble Assessment of Hats and a Stainless Pot, as well as almost enough metal to craft my medic something fancy!

Niiiice. The pot is a great hat.

My backpack

3 refined metals are set, waiting on 4th one, and one more heavy weapon to craft a class-specific. (I hope it's a Toque!)
